Greek Week was one of the major events of the social year during 1956. It was held in February and included sorority and fraternity stunt nights, drop-ins, teas, a concert and a formal dance. Billy May and his orchestra provided the music for the formal. German Club held its annual spring and fall formal dances. The fall dance was held at the West Columbia National Guard Armory with the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Ray McKinley playing the music. Tri Phi held its third annual formal dance at the Columbia Hotel last spring with Tony Torre and his orchestra play ing. Tri Phi is composed of Ilhi Epsilon Pi, Sigma Phi Ep silon and Phi Sigma Kappa. SAE Centennial Sigma Alpha Epsilon cele brated its Centennial. During a week of activities a party was held at the Woman's Club, a banquet at Forest Lake, and as a climax, a formal dance. For the fifth year Kappa Alpha celebrated with its annual Old South Ball and preceding drop-ins and teas. Alpha Eta chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma held its twenty seventh anniversary formal dance at the Wade Hampton Hotel and danced to the musi of Tony Torre and his orchestra. Ruth Tison was named Phi Eap girl. KA Tea Dance Rho chapter of Kappa Alpha held its annual Big Thursday Tea Dance in the ballroom of the Jefferson Hotel. Students, alumni, and friends of Carolina were entertained by the music of Tony Torre and his orchestra. Gamma Nu chapter of Sigma Chi held its annual Homecoming Tea Dance in the ballroom of the Jefferson Hotel. Friends, students and alumni of Mary land and Carolina were enter tained by the music of Tony Torre and his orchestra. A biannual formal was held by Alpha Lambda chapter of Delta Delta Delta at the Jefferson Hotel. Pi Beta Phi held its formal at the Columbia Hotel in March. Tony Torre and his Orchestra provided the music for both these events. A White Star Formal was held by Sigma Nu at the Jeffer son Hotel. The local chapter of Alpha Kappa received its charter last spring and became a chapter of Sigma Delta Tau. Alpha Beta chapter of Chi Psi, closed by the anti-fraternity laws in 1900, was revived this fall. The re activated chapter initiated seven undergraduates. Sigma Chi sponsored its an nual Derby Day with Alpha Delta Pi wiining the trophy and Farley Lawton being crowned Miss Venus. The First annual Aqua Carnival-was sponsored by Delta Zeta with Sigma Chi winning the races. SPE Gets Trophy Sigma Phi Epsilon was awarded a trophy for the R. D. Bean Award at the District Five convention held at Lenoir-Rhyne College last spring. Pi Beta Phi held its Founders' Day Ban quet last spring. Delta Delta Delta offered two scholarships to any woman student at the Uni versity. One scholarship was for $100 and the other for $200. Sigma Phi Ep silon entertained actress Terry Moore on the University campus last fall. The Sig Ep's named Marty Nickerson Sweetheart of their fraternity. Delta Zeta and Delta Sigma Epsilon merged into a unit which retains the name of Delta Zeta and now has 118 chapters. Chi Omega and Kappa Sigma placed first in competition for Homecoming displays.
