This year there have been no rock 'n' roll "White Christmases," no not-so funny satires about cherubic Juve nile delinquents who are getting "nuthin' for Christmas," and re freshingly few sirupy-sweet Xmas type love songs. The only question able sides I have heard so far were on a "Jackie Gleason Play. Music To Stuff Your Stocking. By" album where forty embar rassed violinists play "Jingle Bells" like a Mantovani original. Perhaps the R 'n' R controversy has temporarily displaced oven the seasonal music, or maybe there was just nothing bad enough to become popular. The major difference in a cock tail dress and a formal is that the formal is usually a net covered long dress, which is meant to be worn to dances with a large or chestra. The cocktail dress is that in-between dress that is seen at anytime from five to ten o'clock. The cocktail dress originated in the penthouses of New York in the cocktail set. Though too infor mal for it to be necessary to wear an evening dress, and yet too im portant a business occasion to wear an afternoon dress, the New York lady of fashion devised a dress for her specific needs. Most often the cocktail dress is an elaborate - sheath. However, with the younger set taking up the idea of this handy and comfortable mode of dress, the full skirted, or flared cocktail dress came into being. Now the term "cocktail dress" means "that special dress that you most certainly wouldn't wear to church, and yet is as pretty and as feminine as any long formal." .
