SPORTS DIG E ST ...ly Mac mill... "MOON OVER MIAMI" ... NAW, JUST "HOLD THAT TIGER"... Back in August the Carolina football team was chosen by many sports writers, editors, broadcasters et al, to finish in the sixth position in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Some predicted a seventh place finish for our Birds, and we were even the choice of some to occupy the ACC cellar come Turkey Day. And here we are, atop the ACC heap with a 3-0 record, just in front of the Clemson eleven which has a 2-0 league mark . . . orange blossom visions dance in our heads .. . it's Miami or bust, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Well, I for one go along with Head Coach Warren Giese who says, "The less people say about the Orange Bowl in connection with our football team the better." Coach Giese went on record as saying, "Folks will be doing the team a great favor by not mentioning it." Back to the pre-season ratings . . . we were popularly picked to finish behind Maryland, Duke, North Carolina, Clemson in roughly that order . . . and we were rated as toss-ups against Virginia and N. C. State. More than not figured we could manage the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. So far about the only teams in the ACC to do what they were presupposed to do are Clemson and Wake Forest. SO FAR, SO GOOD... Five games now face our rear and we find our beloved Game roosters nestled on the top rung of the ACC ladder. After a rather inauspicious beginning against Wofford, the Birds showed their spurs and outfought, outclassed and generally broke Duke's back in their 7-0 conquest of the Blue Devils. Miraculously, after only two days of practice, Coach Giese's charges managed to hold the Miami gang to a respectible 6-14 verdict. Now, we're not taking anything away from the Miami team . . . s'matter'o'fact the Hurricanes are about as close to being a professional team as they could possibly be without being chased out of collegiate circles. Three weeks ago the Gamecocks met the UNC Tar Heels and came through with an impressive 14-0 win in what was North Carolina's best game to date. Following the "Battle of the Carolinas," the locals came back strong to whip Virginia after blowing a 13-point lead. So, we've already won two games that we were supposed to lose and that in itself is enough accomplishment for one year on a "rebuilding" football club. We can't blame the students for their enthusiasm and for visualizing the Gamecocks in the 1957 Orange Bowl come December 32nd . . . yet said students should not be disappointed if their team does not make the Bowl Bid, which of course, must come from the ACC brass. "BIRDS WILL SURPRISE MANY," HE SAID ... An unidentified football fan told us prior to the Wofford game back in September that "Carolina will certainly surprise a lot of folks this Fall." And he went on to back up his statement with the following predic tions: Carolina over Wofford, 27-7; Duke, 7-0; North Carolina, 20-13; Virginia, 26-13; Furman, 34-0; N. C. State, 14-6, and Wake Forest, 28-20. "Miami will be too much for Coach Giese's boys," he said, "and should win by a touchdown." Our mysterious friend also thought that the Maryland Terps would win by a single point, 14-13. Gee, if this guy is a bettin' man he should be rich. As you can readily see, he's batting about as near a 1000 as one could possibly do . . . he sure should be in the business! . . What say ? The Big Thursday game! Oh, yes, he did mention it-seems like he said son thing to the effect of Clemson 1.1, CAItOLINA 3!! I'll have to be a doubting Thomas on the margin of the Clemson score, but in the same breath I must admit that this seemingly clair voyant fellow sure has my respect on football prognostications thus far and I sure hope. he still has it come supper time tomorrow! JERSEY NUMBElt 31 OUT . . . CAUSES PHOBIA .. . Here's one for the lexicographers-if the fear of the number 13 is tabbed "triskaidekaphobia"-then wvhat do the South Carolina foot hallers have? No, they're not superstitious of Friday the 13th or the number 13--they have the thing turned around, it's the figure 31 that troubles 'em.~ Because of the forthcoming reasons the jersey number 81 is being dlitchedl on the Carolina football team. It seems that Gamecock football players have conme to regardi it as a jinx and apparently they have reason. Last year, p)romiising sophomore halfback Johnny Stallings was assigned the jersey hearing that numeral and he soon suffered an arm injury that put hinm on the shelf for the entire season. This year fullback Bobby Barrett inherited it undler the enumeration systeni that dlesignates numbers in the 3(0 series to fullbacks. Wearing the numeral, Barrett wvas injured before the first game of the present season an(i saw only limited action against the WVoffordl teani. lie returned to play against Duke and Miami but, still wearing 31, lie wvas hurt in the opening nmoments of the North Carolina ganie and had to wvarmi the bench for the afternoon as wvell as the Virginia~ gamie twvo wveeks ago. Tomorrow as Bobby returns to the football wars he'll have a "35" emblazoned across his chest and back. HO0W TIME DO0TH FLY .. . It's a fast era we 'e living in-even e'lectronic football has come .and gone and it all happened so quickly that not many even noticed. This gimmick (equiping the quarterback with small radio receiving set) wvas used by the Cleveland Browvns professional team in a recent football game wvith the Newv York Giants. But alas, scientific football backfired for the Giants stole the Browvns' signals and apparently wvere prIoud( of it. "\Ve wvere able to get the Browns' signals better than they could," Ray Walsh, general manager of the New York club boasted.
