Battle _.iese-Tatum Series Begins By Jerry Sanders The "Battle of the Carolinas" gets under way tomorrow after noon at Carolina Stadium when the South Carolina Gamecocks meet North Carolina's Tar Heels. Giese-Tatum Square Off The game will not only be a battle of state universities, but a conflict between two of the better football strategists in the nation; namely, Coach Warren Giese of Carolina and Jim Tatum of North Carolina. These two coaches col laborated on a book a few years ago which is now being used by many coaches throughout the nation, and it will be very in teresting to note which coach will "practice what he preaches." South Carolina, finally getting a few breaks from the weather man, has been running through various offensive and defensive plays this week in an effort to be at top strength for the Tar Heel game. Injuries received in the 14-6 loss to Miami last Friday night were comparatively light, although second-string guard Bill Floyd of Greenville was missing from early practices because of a sprained knee. The possibility of Floyd getting to play tomorrow afternoon is slim as Coach Giese doesn't want a more serious injury to occur. Tatum Rebuilding Jim Tatum returned to his alma mater in January and began the all-important task of rebuilding the Tar Heels to a power in the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the beginning of the season, Tatum was quite happy with the fine array of backs reporting for pre season drills. But, injuries struck the North Carolina camp and the enthusiasm dropped. The biggest blow to the North Carolinians was the loss of junior quarterback David Reed due to torn knee liga ments. Smiles are again on the faces of Tatum and his assistants as Reed returned to full scale work outs Monday and North Carolina fans will swarm into Columbia tomorrow to watch the battle of linemen and backs. Tar Heel Backfield Flashy Others in the North Carolina backfield are flashy Ed Sutton, a 200-pound halfback who averaged ' 6.7 yards per carry last year, and at the other halfback slot is elu sive Buddy Sasser, considered by many as being one of the fastest backs in the South. Don Lear, Larry McMullen, Jim Varnum and Wally Vale add more depth to the potential Tar Heel squad. In the forwardl wall North Caro lina Is blessed with such figures as 230-pound center Stuart Pell, 236-pound tackle Leo Russavage, who was out last season with In juries, and lettermen Jimmy Jones and Jack Lineberger at the guard positions. NrhCarolina, thus far this sesn, has lost two games, one being to North Carolina State two weeks ago by a 26-6 score, and last Saturday in Norman, Okla. ~the Tar Heels were blanked by the tough Oklahoma Sooners 36-0. However, these two early season losses will have little bearing on the game tomorrow~ as the battle is rated by most observers as a toss-up. Co-captain Mackie Prickett, quarterback, completed two of three passes for 31 yards and now has a total of 69 yards passing, 43 rushing and a total offense of 112 yards. Prickett's career total Is now 1,500 yards. Out of 16 passes thrown, nine have been complete and only one interceptedl. The Gamecocks have surrendered the ball via fumble fomr times.
