Unbeaten In 8. Gan Frosh Ba Team Ta Regardless of the kind of rec ord South Carolina's baseball Gamecocks come up with this ( season, Coach Ted Petoskey can look to next year's chances with relish. Although he will be losing im portant men in shortstop Frank ] Ellerbe, outfielder Jim Jarrett and pitcher John Cooley, he's going to I have plenty of material to work with in this season's freshman team -- so says freshman coach Heyward Tunstall. Tunstall, who made second team 1 all-ACC last year as a pitcher for t the Gamecocks, says he thinks he knows a good pitcher when he sees one, and this season he's seeing not one but three good ones on the i frosh squad. Petoskey has already expressed interest in one of them, a 6-5, 195 pounder named Bob Yosaitis of Jersey City. Yosaitis can "rear back and blow 'em in," according E to Tunstall. Then there's Jimmy Gay of Taylors, a little fellow with f a good fast ball, a better-than-good curve and a good head. Jimmy Craig of Greenwood, another big boy, has shown just as much promise as the other two. The best possibility to replace Ellerbe at shortstop at present is Basketball Schedule Released Tennessee's Volunteers have been added to the list of opponents South Carolina's Gamecocks will meet in basketball next season. The 1956-57 schedule calls for nine home games, 12 on opponents' courts and two at Charlotte. Opening game will be against Wofford in Columbia, December 1, and last game of the regular sea son will be against Clemson on the home court. The schedule: Dec. 1, Wofford at Columbia; I Dec. 5, Duke at Charlotte; Dec. 8, Georgia at Columbia; Dec. 12, N. C. State at Charlotte; Dec. 15, North Carolina at Columbia; Dec. 19, Tennessee at Knoxville; Dec. 20, Georgia Tech at Atlanta; Dec. 21, Georgia at Athens; Jan. 5, 'Maryland at Columbia; Jan. 12, Wake Forest at Winston-Salem; Jan. 14, Maryland at College Park; Jan. 15, Virginia at Charlottes ville; Jan. 26, Wof ford at Spar-' tanburg; Jan. 28, Citadel at Co lumbia; Feb. 2, Furman at V Greenville; Feb. 7, Wake Forest at Columbia; Feb. 9, N. C. State at Raleigh; Feb. 12, Clemson at Clemson; Feb. 15, Virginia at Co lumbia; Feb. 19, Furman at Co lumbia; Feb. 23, Duke at Durham; Feb. 26, Citadel at Charleston, and March 1, Clemson at Columbia. Beatty Gives Encouragement On, of the most popular op ponents in spring competition for South Carolina was North Caro -lina's track team whom the Game 9cocks edged 69-62 last Saturday. They're still talking about the fine gesture of Tar Heel distance run ner Jim Beatty. Beatty apparently was taken by the competitive spirit of freshman runner Billy Latham who competed simultaneously with the varsi.ty. In the two-mile event, Beatty, coasting along In the lead, discovered that Latham was being shy about taking the inside track. "Don't mind those varsity boys," Beatty s h ou ted. "Come on through !" As It turned out, wide eyed Latham was the only man to come within hollerin' distance of eBeatty at the finish. His time of 10:00.5 was 3.5 seconds better than the South Carolina state varsity record. Said Beatty: "That boy's going to come around." Whetstone Key Man Don Whetstone was the "key stone" of South Carolina's track victory over North Carolina last Saturday. Notably weak on hurdles, the Gamecocks often fal to enter a runner in these events. Whetstone, having never competed in a varsity high hurdle event, de cided to take a crack at it. lHe placed second to give the Game c'ocks three sorely needed points. Then Whetstone joined the nmile relay team to help the Gamecocks es eball ten ted rarsity utility man Pete Stokes of Darlington, but Cleon Reece of 3reenville is sure to assert him ielf next spring, says Tunstall. Zeece made the all-Greenville team n high school. Last week he hit wo homers against Columbia Ugh. Jimmy Harvey of Clover, who iits lefthanded, is the best bet to eplace Jim Jarrett in the out 'ield. Even now he is remindful of Jarrett. He's six feet tall and weighs about 190. He has good )ower and hits a long ball in the reshman cleanup spot. Tunstall's men, who have won ,ight games without a loss, are olid down the lineup. They will )rovide Petoskey with much-needed )ench strength, an item lie's miss ng this year. Petoskey thinks he can build on hese freshmen. This season, he ,ot a big boost from the perform inces of sophomores Buddy Nidif 'er, Ward Fisher, Dave Ketchum Lnd Bunky Shore. In fact, Nidif 'er and Ketchum are leading the ,amecocks at hat. Even if he doesn't produce a onference champion next year, etoskey can really holler, "Wait til next year" in 1957 - so says runstall.
