Pep Club Accepts New Members I have been contacted many times in.the last few weeks concerning the new applicants for the '56-'57 "Pep Club" menibership drive. It takes time to screen all the names we have. We are trying to choose students who will work and who will be a credit to the ."Pep Club." However, I am happy to inform any interested parties that the new members have been selected and will be contacted in the very near future. We hope each new member will come into the organization with "vim, vigor, and vitality," and with the idea of making the '56-'57 "Pep Club" the best the University has ever had. "Buster" Rhame Opens Golf Course My good friend "Buster" Rhame has informed me that his "spanking" new "Putt-A-Round" miniature golf course is in full swing now and that business is booming. Many Carolina students are seen nightly at the 2733 North Main Street golf course. According to many miniature golf enthusiasts, "Bus ter's" course is the best in the Columbia area. Watch for the "'Putt-A-Round" ad in the Gamecock. Bearers of the ad will he entitled to a free eighteen holes of golf. Coed Volleyball Tournament Carolina coeds by the dozens are flocking to the volley ball courts these last few days for the annual coed intra mural volleyball tournament. The Independents are the power of the tournament thus far and should emerge the victor it' past performances are an intdication of their prowess. Baseballers Invade N. C. P'etoskey's baseballers could place themselves in a good position to overtake the AUC leaders this weekend. They take on the strong North Carolina Tar Iteels today and tangle with Duke's powerful Blue Devils tomorrow. Wins over both would give the Birds a 10-3 overall record and a 6-3 conference mark. Track, Baseball Interest High At Carolina Fan interest in track and baseball here at Carolina is at its highest peak in years. Students and outside spectators are flocking to the Gamecocks' home events in droves. Our baseball team is probably the best Coach Ted Petoskey has had in quite some time but still isn't a "world beater." The track squad is undoubtedly the weakest in years; definitely weak in manpower. What, then, brings the spectators out? It is what I have been advocating for quite some time. Al though baseball and track are not the paying sports that football is, we, the students want a representative team in these minor sports. We are interested in seeing the Game cocks compete on even terms with other ACC teams. We are fed up with having to play the role of "doormat." Lack of Depth Hurts For the last two weeks our track team has been defeated in t riangular meets. And in both instances, lack of depth has been the cause. In Virginia last Saturlay, ('oach Haskin's charges took six first places but came in last in t he meet. In the mile run for instance, N. C. State had men finishing cne, two, and three. We can't compete with depth such as this. W\e are considler'ed a major' university a nd in probably he toughest athletic conferenc'e in the country. If' Carolina int ends st ayintg with such teams as l)hike, Maryland, Nor'thi Carl'ina, etc., I say b)uild our teams accor'dingly. If' not, en Iar:ge the State's little f'our' to the little live. Bar'tulski and Roberts Shine While our' track sqIuadl may not be the strongest, we are p)roml( to b)oast indlividual performers who can compete with the b)est. D)ick Bartuiski set a new conference recordc last week wvith a 217 feet, 8 inch heave of the ~javelin. Freddie Roberts ran his best quarter-mile of the year', bettering the current record for South C'arolina. Sonny Wilcher continues to loo0k good as dloes D)on Whetstone and Allen Inabinet.
