He is president 't of the city-wide Baptist Student Union and vice-president of the University Baptist Student Union Ile is also vice-president of the newly organized Carolina Chris tian Service Club. Tom served as pastor during the annual Youth Week at the First Baptist Church in Columbia March 18-25. Working in conjunc tion with )r. Archie Ellis, Baptisi students in Columbia helped tc make Youth Week a success. DeTar, associate pro fessor of chemistry at the Uni versity, has received a National Science Foundation Senior Post doctoral Fellowship to study at Harvard University. Newly-instituted this year, the award is designed to aid those al ready experienced in the field of science, to increase their compe tence in their specialized field or to broaden their experience in re lated fields of science. A Ph.D. degree for a minimum of five years is required or the equivalent in research experience and training. At Harvard Dr. DeTar will work with Dr. Frank Westheimer of the Harvard faculty in the field f biochemical reaction mechan isms. A specialist in the field of physi :al organic chemistry, Dr. DeTar received the B.S. degree from the University of Illinois. and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was employed by the DuPont Company and then taught at Cor nell University for seven years. Dr. DeTar came to the University of South Carolina in 1953. Dr. DeTar, his wife, Frances, and their four children will leave for Harvard around September 1. Grant offers an initial training period of one month in a selected training store, then on-the-job training in various stores for approximately four and one-half years during which time candidates work as trainees, floor men and assistant managers, be :oming store managers at the end of the training period. Mr. Wilkin would like to talk with Business Administration and Liberal Arts majors for these positions.
