For when Jerra Lynne matched her own dimensions against those reported by Henry Dreyftes, one of the nation's foremost industrial designers, in his best-selling book, "Designing for People," she found that she was far from "average." Typical Figure The Dreyfuss typical figure, which was developed after years of research and which serves as the model for the scores of products he designs, is five feet, three inches tall, and has a 39-inch hip spread, a 35-inch bust and a 29-inch waist. Compared with her, Jerra Lynne towers to five feet, six inches, and measures 36 inches in the hips, 36 in the bust and 25 in the waist. A junior at Southern California and a major in business administration, she admits that she's not one bit envious of this mythical average woman D)esigner Dreyfuss has con jured up and christened "Jose phine." Numerous Helper. In the course of his research, which involved the collaboration of ear doctors, nieu rologi sts, psychol ogists a n d opticians, Dreyfuss found that three and eight-tenths per cent of American women are left-handed, two-tenths of one per cent are color blind, four and one half per cent are hard of hearing, and fifty-six and four-tenths per c-ent wvear glasses. .Jerra Lynne pleads "not guilty" on all scores. P'roves Useful But the Dreyfuss a v e r a g e woman, although she may win no beauty contests, has proved im measurably useful to the industrial dlesigner as the target consumer for- whom he designs everything from telephone head sets to the in teriors of hotel rooms. Quite apart from the lore it pre sents about the average American woman, the Dreyfuss book is being widely read by students throughout 'the country who have a special in terest in design, engineering andl architecture, since it presents an informal, behind-the-scenes record of D)reyfuss' twenty-five years of activity in his profession. The b ook contains concrete suggestions for the sort of academic training most useful to industrial designers and explains in detail how the D)reyfuss organization functions in relation to its clients. The Alpha Lambda chapter was instilled at the University on No vember 28, 1928. Delta Delta Delta has 99 chapters, with two in Canada, and over 50,000 members. This summer Delta Delta Delta held the first National Women's Fraternity leadership meeting at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Alpha Lambda was the local chap ter of Beta Zeta before it was in stalled in the national sorority. Current Events Low A poll on current events recently taken at Winthrop showed that students were not up on the ne'ws. Poor results were demonstrated by failure to define interposition, to identify the Army Chief of Staff, and to give the positions or occu pations of two candidates for the presidential nomination of the Democratic party. Gittman of Columbia upon her retirement from service with the Delta Zeta chapter. - A tea was given in the sorority room by the alumnae association and at this time Mrs. Gittman was presented an engraved silver serv ing dish. Mrs. Gittman was one of the original charter - nembers of the Beta Delta chapter at the Univer sity. She is one of the two charter members left in Columbia.
