Grady used the Citadel game to b)reak a school scoring record and lift his average to 23.7, placing himself in a tie with Lennie Rosen bluth for conference leadership. Collins also has boosted bo0th his scoring, from 13.0 to 16.8, andl re' bound averages, 18.3, and is neck and neck with Ron Shavlik of N. C. State for the conference rehoundl ing leadership. Swimming has been a neglected sport at Carolina 1)nd it is a shame when it is a known fact that there are enough .od men on this campus to pos ibly make us a contender for state ud( con ference honors. [t is absolutely dead, so, what do we intend doing about it? rhere are some who probably care little what is done but if :he truth were known, the majority of the students are con erned about this matter and would like to see strides to vard improving it. There have been many suggestions in he past but they all seem to die along with the spirit. The Pep Club of this year is planning big things to try o improve the situation but they alone cannot do the job. 1'his club is a very small percentage of the student body and ny personal opinion is that this should not be a job for this roup alone but every student here should think of himself is a member and we should work together as one big "Pep 'lub." I cannot speak for the entire membership, but as 'eep, I would like to see each student enrolled at Carolina ign applications to become a part of this organization and )ledge themselves to the task of creating such a "spirit" iere that all other schools in this area and entire South vould look up to us as the "Spirit Center of the South." At recent basketball games it has been very noticeable hat things are looking up. But just who is responsible for his new uprising? The older students, the veterans. What ias happened to the new students coming in and all the )thers that call themselves a part of Carolina? Is it because hey are too dignified to cheer, no energy, or they just don't rive a rip? There is an old proverb in Matthev XXVI 41 :hat reads: "The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Is .his the case? I sure would hate to think of the Carolina ;tudent body as a group of this type. Men like Ab Avinger, fim Worthman, "Hunk" Miller, Ed Houston, and cheerleader Ferry Beasley, who has been doing more than his share ately, should be commended for their efforts at recent )asketball games. The banners they paint add much to the tame and many more such as these would add much more :o the game itself. I could not help but notice the Sigma vu banner flying during The games. Is this the only fra :ernity represented at our athletic events? The question arises now, what do our athletes think of the Carolina spirit? I would hate to print some of the com rnents, but upon interviewing a few I found all remarks made were about the same with a few variations. Jack Hall, who transferred to Carolina from Georgia Tech said there was no comparison. Some will say, "Look what they have to cheer about." It is true that most students like to have winners to cheer but if they will put out that extra effort when our team is trailing, let the boys know we are behind them regardless whether they are leading by a touchdown or ten points or behind the same amount, they may pull that upset. Who knows, we may have won a couple of those close games last season if the students had not let the boys down. Hall thinks more restrictions on freshmen would help increase school spirit. Buddy Mayfield and King Dixon, both of the freshman team agree. Alex Hawkins chimed in during the interview and told of the inspiration the crowd always gave him when he took the field before gametime and at the half when they left. All these men agreed that it gave them that extra incentive to p)lay that much harder when they knewv the crowd was with them. F'ellow students, in closing I want to challenge you, all four thousand, to show up on the night of February 14 at the Carolina Field House for the South Carolina-Furman basketball game. This night has been tabbed, "The Spirit of 56" night and the studlents who are wvorking so hard to see that all of you are there, are hoping that you will carry into the fieldhouse a spirit such as a Carolina student body has never displayed before and from this night on throughout the coming year so we can truly say, "Wow!
