Collins Still Stars For Gamecocks By Lewis Cromer Sports Writer Carolina's six-foot, six-inch cen ter, Lee Collins, appears to be off to a slow start in the basketball wars this year. However, before critics begin to lowrate this tall lad, it may be well to look at the difference in this year's team and last year's outfit, with whom Lee scored 16.5 points per game and ranked high in the conference. Last year Collins was almost the sole sharpshooter on the team and also the tallest man on the squad by far. On his shoulders fell most of the shooting responsibility, and al though aided greatly by Woody Preston and Tom Hofferth, Lee was Carolina's paramount threat under the boards as well. This year presents quite a study in contrast. This year, Carolina has one of the conference's top scorers in Grady Wallace and another scoring threat in the per son of Bobby McCoy. With such basketeers as this "Pikevillo Duo" on hand, Collins has not needed to take as many shots as he did last year and has shown himself to be something far better than a mere shotmaker, namely, a team man. Anyone who has seen Carolina play this year can see the part that Collins has played in the team's success. He has given the Game cocks a center, dependable for re bounds and floorwork. His shoot ing eye, too, has been better than the observer will readily admit. He is averaging 16 rebounds per game and last week he was averaging 16 points per game, second best on the squad, and with a shooting per centage of 401. He is certainly an integral part of Frank Johnson's club. Collins is finishing his collegiate career this year at Carolina. For the past three years he has been a regulai for the basketballers and last year was leading scorer on the team. He was rated highly in pre season by sports scribes throughout the state as a potential candidate for stute scoring honors. Though his point making has not been as great as anticipated, he has come through brilliantly on rebounds and floor play, and deserves to receive a share of credit for this year's South Carolina basketball team. Notice Intramural officials announced that intramural basketball will begin the first week of next semester. All independents who plan to enter teams this season are urged to contact the intra-' mural office by Wednesday, January 18 to enter their teams. There will be no last-minute additions to the leagues, so get your team entered right away so schedules may be drawn up. P'i Kappa Alpha fraternity is the defending campus and fra ternity champions. Snowden College won the independent title last year. ~Biddies Are Beaten 96-78 By Jackson The powerful F o r t Jackson Eagles pulled away in the second half to defeat the University of South Carolina freshmen, 96-78, Tuesday night in the Field House. The game was the preliminary to the varsity battle between South ~ACarolina and Duke, which was won by the Blue Devils, 63-52. The Eagles, who are rated as the second-best service team in the eastern United States, jumped into an early lead, but the Biddies, led by Richard Hoffman, Don Grabow, and Cookie Pericola, rallied and cut the margin to 43-42 at halftime. The frosh kept the score close until midway of the second half, but the experience of the soldiers began to pay off and they steadily increased their lead. Vince Leta led the second half Fort Jackson surge and wound up the evening with 29 poInts, high for the game. White added 26 points to take runner-up honors for the soldiers. Hoffman led the Biddies' scoring wyith 25 points. Grabow had 20 and Paricoln 19 for the outelassed frosh. dieco atCroia%Hueirda Giese atto pitr.Gis,fr meh sisato Ji auma .i. THlE OLD AND NEW . .. He will probably be there until Mrs. Giese arrives in Columbia. Giese, 31-year-old assistant foot ball coach at Maryland, has signed a reported three-year contract for $12,000 per year to coach the Gamecocks. He replaces Rex En right who will remain at Carolina as athletic director. Assistants Stay All of the assistant coaches at Carolina will probably stay here except Earl Dunham, backfield coach, who resigned to take a pub lic relations job with the American Brewers Association. Those re maining are Hank Bartos, Ted Petoskey, Ernie Lawhorne, Blackie Johnson, a n d freshman coach Weems Baskin. Giese will hire two new assist ants, one to replace Dunham and one other. Among those he is con sidering are two line coaches at Maryland, Emmett Cheek and Ed Kensler, and the freshman coach at Maryland, Bill (Whitey) Dowell. Now that Jim Tatum has left Maryland for North Carolina, Giese should have no trouble getting the ones he wants. Strong Line Giese says that he is going to concentrate on building up a powerful line at Carolina. That is one of the main essentials of a winning team. He was an assistant coach at Maryland for eight years and knows what he is talking about. He has two children and another is expected soon. "Rex Enright is one of the most respected men in his field, and he will understand my problems," said Giese. Rex Oldest Coach Enright has coached more years than any other coach in the At lantic Coast Conference. He has produced some good teams and some surprise victories. These in clude seven wins, two losses and one tie against top rival Clemson. President Russell said of En righ': "As he retires as our head football coach, the University salutes Rex Enright as both a gentleman and sportsman in the finest sense of these terms and joins him in looking back with pride and satisfaction upon his en viable record as head football coach at the University. Enright Says Said Enright, in part: "With the increased tempo a n d exacting duties required by the two jobs, I deemed it impossible to handle both positions adequately.
