Swimming Tea North Carolin The Carolina swimming team opens their season tomorrow after noon at four o'clock against North Carolina. They face N. C. State Wednesday afternoon. Both meets will be held here. The Gamecock tankmen will be led by Len Baranski, Jim Turner, Hal Lefferts and Storm Bailey on freestyle; Otis Etheredge on breaststroke and individual med ley; Bob Campbell on breaststroke; Wilson Ilardee on backstroke. Winter Kimes is the diver for the Gamecocks. Bill Wilkins, an other diver, is ineligible this semester, but will probably dive for experience. Charlie Krepp, one of the na tion's finest backstrokers, will spearhead the Tar Heel's attack. State He made All-American in his sophomore year last season. Krepp will be backed by Bill Roth, a soph sprinter; Dave Mc Innis, a compact little diver; Mac Mahaffy, holder of the North Carolina breaststroke record; Dick Baker, senior sprinter, aid Walt Tose, sophomore distance man. Last year the Tar Heel club won six meets and lost three, finishing second in the ACC and fifth in the National Collegiates. Two of North Carolina's losses was to N. C. State, who dominated the conference last year. Tnis was the first time North Carolina had been defeated in four years. State will be led by Dave Mc Intyre in the individual medley and a returnee from the Army, Frank Nauss. such a man, a man who is opposed to what they believe is in their best interests? Remember that our tuition here does not pay most of the expense of educating us. The taxpayers, the voters, of our state supply the funds. Should they not then have some say so about what goes on at the Uni versity and about the product it turns out? Dean Travelstead was not fired. Our trustees decided that it would be better not to renew his contract; and as a matter of courtesy, informed him of this fact in plenty of time to enable him to find employment else where. Once a university hires a professor, it is required to keep him for the rest of his natural life, or until it can find some serious, obvious defect in his character or teaching methods, or are our officials permitted to use some discretion in the matter? If the university is to do the job it exists to do, certainly the officials should be allowed some latitude here. I read Dr. Travelstead's unim pressive article which appeared in The State Sunday before last. Among other objections to it, I "oticed he complained that he was not specifically told not to "discuss the matter of segrega tion. . . ." It seems to me that if the dean wanted to stay at Carolina, he should, after being called in to see the President once already on a similar matter., had heen discerning enough to realize that he shouh use some discre tion in the matter. After all, the dean is a fully grown man, a dean of a state university, and he should have some powers of discernment and at least a fair 1Zense of discretion. I can hardly see how lie was wronged on this point. In dIiscussions on thIiis co.nt ro versy, I repecatedly hear it saiid that his right of free spieech was violated. The constitution gturan tees that no one shall he arrest ed or impriso~nedl because of' his speech, but I k now of no principle wvhich states that an empiloyver must retain an employee even though the employee's speech highly irritates and emharrasses the employer. D r. Travelsteadl had every right to say whatever he wished ; nohody is a rgui ing that he didn't. But yet our "l iierals" scream. IEvidlently it is all right for Dri. Travelstead to assert his right, hut wvrong for the board to assert theirs. Without at this time (discussing the desirability of segregation or the v alute of some li mitat ion on the power of the Supreme Court, or of states rights, I can say this much: That the people of the deep South desire cotn inued segregation. We are at - ta(cked on all fronts. If we want to win this fight, and we still have a fair chance, we* must c'ard against the infiltration otf our opponents into key posit ions. Idon't mean that. we must form vitrilante committees, or anything lik'e that: bu T do think we shotl e1(xe'rcise (cait ion in the 'elettion of people to occuipy these positions. It is ais inconi eivahle' to mne to have as dean of the state university's school of edtuention an avowedl, firmly co'nvincedl integrationist as it would be for the U. A s for the phrase, "academic freedom" I know of few such l-defined principles which can t)e held to overrate all other 'onsiderat ions in all cases. However, defeat at the hands of Duke or North Caro lina would be no disgrace. Duke-North Carolina Carolina dons the role of under dog in a contest versus Duke to night in Durham. The Blue Devils placed second to N. C. State in the ACC last season, with a con ference record of 11-3, and later in the NCAA tournament at New York were edged out by powerful Villanova, 74-73. Duke is sup ported by the return of its three top scorers from last season, in cluding All-Conference forward Ron Mayer. The Gamecocks move over to Chapel Hill for a game with UNC tomorrow night. And the - Tar Heels also boast the return of three of their scoring leaders, in cluding All-Conference forward Len Rosenbluth. Head Coach Frank Johnson will continue with his starting lineup of Wallace and Art Smejkal, forwards, Collins at center, and Benny Fannin and Bob McCoy, guards. South Carolina is scheduled to meet the Wolfpack of N. C. State next Wednesday night, Dec. 14. The game will be played in the new Charlotte Coliseum, and a sizeable crowd of South Carolinians are expected to travel up for the game. N. C. State was ACC champion and one of the top five in the nation last season. State Is Third The Wolfpack ranks third in the nation, behind San Francisco and Kentucky, on the latest AP Sportswriters' lists.
