JOHNSON "p v Dy Waiter Josuen In the October 31 issue of Sports Illustrated there is an article titled "Tigers, Truncheons and Tradition." The title itself gives an idea about how the article runs, and it is lousy besides. It is pro-Clemson. It starts off with something that is near the truth-that the Clemson-Carolina game is the one which will decide the state championship. Coles Phinizy, the author, talks about the tradition of the game then goes into a lot of drivel about people trying to trade whole chickens for tickets and calling Jimmy Byrnes the Governor and being informed by an officer that a fellow named Timmerman holds that office at present. Mr. Phinizy-a strange name, that-lists some reasons why the attendance should be less than for the other games, but in some unexplainable way there is always a full house. His reasons, a mid-season game, on Thursday instead of the conventional Saturday as a football game should be, and< competition from the fair such as cotton candy and fat cattle, seems like a lot of nonsense to me. The idea of spangled dancing girls and whirly rides distracting from the game! Yet the 35,000 are always there. The article sounds like something written to fill in extra space. Maybe Mr. Phinizy is a member of IPTAY. He claims that Clemson took all the honors, pre-game activities as well as the game. He lists the hair cuts administered to Carolina students and confiscated property which belonged to the Gamecock rooters. It seems that the Gamecocks only got to clean the scalp of two Tigers, and were not able to penetrate their stout defense and paint up the heavily guarded statue of Tom Clemson. Besides all that, the seemingly inexperienced reporter even failed to get the right name of the head coach at Carolina. He referred to Coach Enright by the name of Tex. I have heard him designated by various other names but this is the first time for Tex. He does mention one time that Carolina has dominated the game for about the last 10 years. * * * * Carolina played a somewhat better game against Mary land than was expected by some. The halfbacks did not fare very well, though. Brazell previously had a better than nine yards per try average, but he only got seven yards in five attempts against the Terrapins. This dropped his average to 7.3, still not bad. Caskey maintained his average, 5.0, but he ran the ball only twice. It was a day for quarterbacks. They attempted 26 passes, completing 10 of them. This is much more than usual, but they couldn't get any yardage on the ground and.had to try something. The Gamecocks are now 2-4 for the season and would have to win all three of their remaining games to have a winning season. Even I wouldn't make such a prediction. But I will predict that they will win two of them, North Carolina and Virginia. In spite of Duke's loss to Georgia Tech, the Blue Devils will be too much for Carolina. The Gamecocks don't quite rank with Tech. North Carolina has won only one of their six games and that was N. C. State by one touchdown. They lost to Okla homa by only six points, their best game of the year. The Tar Heels lack a good quarterback. * * * * Clemson leads the ACC in total offense with 306.6 yards per game average. They are the only team with over 300 yards per game. Carolina ranks fourth with 276 yards per game. Clemson also leads in rushing offense with 216.8| average per game, with the Birds fourth with 176.8 average. Clemson leads the conference in pass defense, is second in both total defiense and rushing defense. Maryland is tops in the latter two. Both teams helped themselves in those dlepart ments against Carolina. Wake Forest leads in passing offense with 139.3 yards per game. Carolina is second through the air lanes with 97.5 yards per game. Individually, Consoles of Wake Forest leads in total of fense with 576 yards. Carolina does not have a man in the top twelve. In rushing, Wells of Clemson leads with a 6.1 average. Caskey of Carolina is 12th with 5.0 yards per try. In the passing department the Gamecocks fare a little better. Prickett is eighth, Hall tenth and Bunch eleventh. Consoles of Wake Forest leads with 62 completions in 111 attempts for 692 yards. This is less than his total offense because of lost yardage when he got swamped trying to pass. Those losses counted in his total offense. * * * * The column is all football this week, but, after all, this is football season and a lot of people are interested in it. Besides, I don't have anything else to write about. In this forthcoming issue of Sports Illustrated there is another article to which I will bring your interest. This one is titled "Football Down South" and is by Herman Hickman, who is much more of an authority than a fellow named Coles Phinizy. Mr. Hickman gives a rundown of the three big conferencea in the South, the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the Southern Conference. In the Southeastern he rates Georgia Tech as top dog, with Mississippi as a strong choice. He calls this the second strongest conference In the country. In the Southern it is West Virginia on top with Virginia Tech running second. In the ACC, of course, Hickman places Maryland in first slot with Duke running close behind. Carolina is down the line sornewhere, along with North Carolina and Virginia. Center George Stavnltski and end Will Fry are the Tar Heel standouts. Birds Will Mee Ed. PRICKETT GETS YARDAGE -. . However, they have a lead in statistics, leading in first downs, rushing yardage, total offense, and are only five yards behind in passing. Sat urday afternoon depend greatly or the play of quarterback Mackie Prickett, who is rapidly regain ing the form that made him the leading passer in the Atlantk Coast Conference last season. Prickett was kept out of actior much of the time and handicapped at others by a broken finger and injured rib in early games, but lasi weekend against Maryland he was "whole" again and able to pEform as Gamecock fans have expected. Against the Terps, who are rated as the nation's top defensive team, Prickett was able to com plete five of 10 passes for 44 yards and gain an additional 21 on quar terback keep plays. Prickett now leads the Game cocks in passing for the seasor with 18 completions in 42 attempt for 242 yards and has picked ur 66 yards rushing for a total of fense of 308. The Gamecock ace will continue to get capable relief from sopho more Bobby Bunch, who is second to Prickett in total offense wit1 282 yards. Ca ln S u morrow Prickett and Bunch will have the team's top receiver, end Julius Derrick, available again after he missed the Maryland game with a side injury. Derrick has caught eight passes for 128 yards. Other top targets for the passers are halfback Carl Brazell, end Buddy Frick and halfbacks Mike Caskey and Carrol McClain.. Caskey leads the Gamecocks i' rushing yardage with 217 and a 5.0 average, along with catching four passes for 29 yards. Brazell has the best rushing average, 7.3, and has picked up 204 yards rushing. He has caught eight passes for 81 yards and is one of the most dangerous broken field runners in the Atlantic Coast Conference. South Carolina's inexperienced line is impoving rapidly, and if Prickett, Brazell and Caskey can get a little more room to maneuver in the remaining games they are likely to end up among the confer ence leaders in their specialties. The Gamecocks' appearance in the Oyster Bowl this week end will be their second trip to Nor folk.
