JOHNSON r RAG Jy Walter Johm"On THE MINOR SPORTS There has been a lot of talk about basketball in South Carolina not being equal to that in North Carolina. Football and other major sports have been concerned in the same discussion. But what about the minor sports? Not very much is heard about tennis, swimming, golf, etc., but the ACC schools in North Carolina usually put out good teams in these sports. The USC swimming team ended the season with only nine men. They lost six meets while beating Wofford, a relatively new team in the state. UNC and N. C. State both beat them by a large margin. Since the conference rules require the University to have a team and to participate in meets with the other schools, we have one. But the boys who go out do it because they like the sport and they usually spend a lot of time and work hard at it. But there aren't enough boys who are interested enough in these so-called minor sports to spend the time for nothing. The tennis team is another team that has never been spectacular. It is more of a spectator sport than golf and swimming. A crowd to cheer them on would probably be appreciated more than it would be unappreciated. The golf team is generally expected to be a better team this year than last year. Since they don't have their matches near school it is hard for the students to see them, even if they wanted to. Track and baseball are two other sports which will be carried on away from school this season. Both of these drew good crowds when they were held on Davis field. Baseball will be played at the Veteran's Hospital field and track meets will be held at Fort Jackson. HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONS The class C, class B, and class A state high school basket ball championships were held in the Carolina Field House last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Five of the six ganies vere between well matched teams with the final score being decided in the final minutes. Only the game between Olympia and Summerville, in which Olympia won easily with the help of high-scoring Donnie Arant, was not close. Kenneth Rogers of Mullins scored :12 points against Greer and would be a good choice for the outstanding player of these state finals, even though his team lost. Tonight and tomorrow night the state AA finals will be held in the Carolina Field .Iouse. The Dreher Blue Devils won the lower state championship and Spartanburg's Red Birds, the only team to beat D)reher this season, are the upper state champions. So some more goodl basketball will probably be offered if anyone is interestedl. BIDDIES BECOME ROOSTERS According to Blackie Johnston, the new assistant foot ball coach, the food in the USC dining hall is making the "Biddies" grow into full-fledged roosters. Take Hlonea Path's Carrol McClain for instance, lie came to Carolina weighing a mere 155 pounds. Now, in spite of being in top shape in winter practice, he p)acks 172 p)ounds of meat. Tackle Tommy Addison of Lancaster has movedl from 215 to 227 pounds, andl halfback .Johnny Stallings of Macon, Ga., has gained from 165 to 185. A more extreme case is a promising cnd, .Julius lDerrick, who came here in the fall of 1952, weighing 170 and now is carrying aroundl 208 pounds and hasn't lost an ounce of speed. AFTER A DIP .. .
