many A118' Find Birds 'Among Them The All-American, All-ACC, and All-South teams are beginning to reach the newspapers and sports fans throughout the nation. Amo g the many great football play s honored are some of our own GamecocUs who have shown great inividual play through the entire season. W Heading thy list of "All's" is rolina's fi..st "full fledged" All American and that is guard Frank Mincevich who was picked, along with three others, as the best guards in the nation by Look Magazine. "The Friendly Bear" left during the week for New York where he will join the other twenty-one Look All-Americans for a gala week end of television ' and radio appearances and a gen (ral good time. *ne of the Best Birds Of the many footballers. who matriculate through this institu tion Mincevich must be ranked with the greatest and spoken of in the same breath with the likes of Bryant Meeks, Steve Wadiak, Earl Dunham, Norris Mullis, and many others. "The Bear" came to this school from a junior college in the state of Washington and ever since his ar:ival he has put out consistent performances of great ness. His coaches and fellow players regard him as one of the greatest as do the San Francisco 49ers who have already drafted him for the pro football club. Perhaps "Minnie's" greatest game was against the mighty Black Knights of the Hudson when the Gamecocks beat the Army eleven, 34-20, earlier in the season. Frank was opposite a poten*l All-American in Ralph Chesnaukas and "Minnie" literally moved Chesnaukas all over the field in a performance of sheer 0 strength and brawn. To a great ball player who has a great spirit to win goes the distinction of being Carolina's first first string All American football player. Also receiving All-American attention was center Leon Cun ningham who has held down the center position here at Carolina for the past three years. Leon was chosen on the third team of -the NEA All-American club for his outstanding and consistent play through the 1954 season. Conference Choices As this paper goes to press two All-ACC teams have been chosen and USC has received notice in both. The first was that team picked by the Charlotte News and Observer. It honored Mincevich and fullback Bill Wohrman who is probably one of the best blockers in the nation. On their second team they mentioned halfback Carl Brazell, quarterback Mackie Pric kett and Cunningham. The other All ACC team was selected by the Associated Press. Mincevich and Cunningham joined nineyther conference players on the first string unit of this team. Just shading Prickett out at puarterback was Jerry Barger. razell and Wohrman also re ceived second team honors on the AP eleven. Mentioned on Collier's All South eleven was Cunningham who was one of this same maga zine's pre-season choices for All American honors. AII-Staters Receiving mention on the All State Il club were Prickett, at quarter ack (beating out pre season All-America candidate, Don King), Wohrman at full, Mincevich at guard, Cunningham at center, and Lovell at tackle. This team was picked by sports writers under the direction of Jake Penland, sports editor of the State paper. More "All's" are yet to come with the prospects of more Game cocks dotting the national head lince and the honor rolls of dif ferent organisation's football greats for 1954. Mackie Prickett was chosen the Player of the Year in South Caro lina for the 1954 season by the United Press. Quarterback Mackie Prickett sneaked across for the touchdown. After that score it was Carolina moving the ball, but Wake Forest doing the scoring. Deadlocked Affair The Deacons tied the game in the third period at 13-all. In the final period Carolina managed to hang onto the ball long enough to allow fullback Bill Wohrman to dive over center for the touch down that put the Birds in front. Jim Jarett then came into the game and booted the extra point that proved to be the margin of victory. The game was not settled until the final play of the afternoon. With time running out Wake quarterback Nick Consoles pitched a screen-pass to halfback John Parham who scampered 35 yards before Mike Caskey pulled him down. Then with Wake Forest easily within scoring distance Consoles faded back to pass, and was smothered with the ball as time ran out.
