C.gers Begin Work; Season. Opener Dec. 2 Twenty faces, many of them new, were on hand Monday when Coach Frank Johnson began put ting his basketball team through the paces preparing for the sea son's opener Iec. 2, with Geeorgia in Columbia. Among the new faces were five transters from Pikeville Junior College. All of them played on a team that won 82 of 35 games last season. The transfers are Woody Preston who stands 6-8, Sam Smith, 6-4, both are for wards. Three of the new boys are guard: Russ Porter and Sol Richardson, both 6 feet even and Benny Fannin 5-11. Preston was fifth leading scorer in the nation among junior colleges last year with 670 points and a 19.1 aver age. Porter Smith and Fannin aver aged ten points a game or better. Starters Back Coach Johnson has his entire I first team back from last year ( plus Jack Neeley and Art t Smejjkal, ineligible last season, I but ready to go again. Joe Smith, g Tom Hofferth, Lee Collins, Jack i Hufford and Paul Goldsmith all h holdovers from the starting five last season are back again. Smith led the Gamecock scorers last year with a 16.6 average, b while Hofferth averaged 12.9, Collins 12.7, and Hufford 11.8. t These men will get plenty of com- t petition from the newcomers for starting positions. Carolina has a shortage of tall men as has been the case since 6 feet and 11 inches Jim Slaughter | wound up his career in 1951. Lee 0 Collins at 6-6 will be the tallest P man on the Carolina squad. It Iso provided a personal duel, for im, with his arch rival for All 'onference honors at fullback in he person of Maryland's Dick lielski. Wohrman saw his team o down to a rather crushing de eat but his personal battle ended i a rather resounding triumph. Blocking Genius Bill has no peers anywhere in his conference in the art of locking and it is seriously doubted rat there is a better blocker in ie entire nation. Wohrman has n uncanny knowledge of how to it a man properly so that he ill go down as well as providing ill the opportunity to hit another tan. He was seen knocking men ut on end around plays, on pass lays, during punt formation, and ownfield. His ability in this field arned him the Jacobs' Trophy as nie outstanding blocker in South arolina and the Atlantic Coast onference for the 1953 season. On defense Wohrman moves into linebacker slot where he was 2en making some fine stops be )re the Terps had a chance to et the play going, on many occa ions. Top Rusher Bill is not too outstanding when comes to running although he as the "stuff" to crack any line ride open with his powerful legs apable of carrying him through niost anything. However, against is arch rival, he showed some eal prowess in carrying the ball aving his greatest (lay in that lepartment. He carried the ball ix times and picked up 25 yards or a 4.1-yard average per try vhile Bielski carried the ball 15 .imes for 54 yards giving him an iverage of only 3.6 per try. He shot the gap from linebacker and stopped us." Big Dick really showed some class when it came to the defen sive part of last Saturday's game with some brilliant play diagnosis which enabled him to stop many Maryland plays before they -ver had a chance to start. On offense Dick mans the right side of the "solid center" of the big Gamecock line. His quick jump on. his opponents give him that "added something" which helps for a lineman to really put in some top blocking. He has just that and was seen leading many plays through the powerful Mary land line. South Carolina Product Dick came to Carolina from Fort Mill, S. C. where he was a standout in football and basket ball playing end in high school football. He played in the Shrine Bowl and North-South game as a senior in high school showing much promise as a college ball player. He played tackle on the junior varsity, his first year, at Soutl Carolina, and was moved to guarc last year. It is a great guard that car command the attention of a coacl who not only knows football play ers but very particularly know a good guard being one of th, greatest in his own playing days This week's Lineman of the Weel is truly one of the best of a grea Gamecock line.
