By MIKE LOVEJOY The powerful Clemson Tigers will venture into Carolina Stadium, tomorrow afternoon, with a 29-19 won-lost record in a series which has ranged over fifty-one years, with the South Carolina Gamecocks. The two teams are rated just about even with both stopping a top-rated team. The two have taken a squad trouncing at the hands of two top-rated clubs, also. The statistics show that the two teams have power in a certain field but then the other club has an equalizing power in an opposite field. The Gamecocks are second in the con ference in total offense but the Tigers are first in the con ference in total defense. The Roosters are second in the con ference in rushing offense whereas the Tigers are tops in rushing defense. A little something which may just tell the tale is that Carolina leads the conference in total passing offense while the Clemsonites are only fifth on the defensive side of this passing "stuff." Those statistics tell an "equal" story but then in this game everything goes out the window as these two ball clubs insist on disproving the statistics, the experts, and in upsetting either the Clemson supporters or the Carolina supporters, every year!! BIRDS LACKING AT TACKLE The Enrightmen have a decided disadvantage in the line with the only proven tackle being the highly underrated co captain, Harry Lovell. Lovell has proven his worth in all of the three Roster tilts, receiving little notice from the press or the fans. This strong-minded leader has spearheaded many defensive plays and led the way for his halfbacks on many of the latters' get-aways. The tackle poqition is just about the strongest part of the Clemson forward wall with Clyde White and Tommy Mattos, two Greenville boys, having improved tremendously since the beginning of the season. Coach Enright has some good material to work with in the tackle slots, but none of it is proven as is Lovell. Enright lost the services of Bob Schwartz in the Furman game, leaving Gene Kopec and Sam DeLuca for one tackle, leaving no depth behind Lovell. This one weakness in the Carolina line may prove fatal, but then the remainder of the Rooster line is not likely going to hang around and watch the tackle slots "cave in." GUARDS, CENTERS, ENDS ... Much attention is being given to the outstanding play of Clemson guard Dick DeSimone. True, this young man is very, very good, but then he will be up against the strongest part of the Bird line, across the center. Frank Mincevich, Leon Cunningham, and Dick Covington pose as formidable a pivot combination as has ever played at USC. It does not stop there, either, with Bill Weston, Bill Floyd (who was a former teammate of both White and Mattos), and Hugh Bell stand ing right behind the Mincevich-Cunningham-Covington trio. Moving out on the flanks Carolina may be just a bit stronger here also. A highly underrated. individual on the Carolina club, along with Lovell, is Spec Granger, who has been playing some bang-up ball all season. To run his end is almost impossible. Spec is a good pass receiver and blocker. On the other end there is Joe Silas, with the likes of L'arry Gosnell, Buddy Frick, Bill Rivers, Don Sehulater, and Joe Fredricks to back them up. TWO POWERFUL BACKFIELDS Back in the backfield, where the boys carry the pigskin, the Tigers may be a little stronger in the quarterback slot in that they have the depth. All-America Don King is no little man in the Tiger offense, but his knees have been giving him trouble all season, and it is not entirely impossible that a few Carolina linemen will not be "knocking at those knees" so that they may be used in a sitting position only, on the Clemson bench. Sophomore Charlie Bussey has shown great promise in King's absence with three more to back them up. But, across the fence one sees Harold Lewis and the ever present Mackie Prickett. Lewis' shoulder is shaping up very well and it is anticipated that he will be ready to use his whole efforts for the first time since the Army game. The sensation of the entire ball club, Prickett, will be out to re gain his conference lead in total offense and in doing that he may .iust break Johnny Gramling's record of total passes completed in 'the sophomore year. Prickett is only two away from tying that record. Prickett is a pretty hard man to hurt so the chance of depth, beyond him being needed, are pretty slim. Both teams have an "amplitude" of halfbacks as far as experience, speed, deception, and depth go. The Gamecocks will be starting with the two "little men" in Carl Brazell and Mike Caskey giving way to the likes of Tommy Woodlee, Bill Tarrer, Bobby Drawdy, and Crosby Lewis, 'when the occasion arises. The Tigers will more than likely lead off with Joe Pagliel and Joel Wells with speedy Buck George, Jim Coleman, and Ken Moore ready for duty at any instant. FINAL, 13-7, CAROLINA!! In the fullback slot the Gamecocks have it all over the Tigers. Bill Wohrman has no peers anywhere in the South when it comes to blocking and perhaps his only peer, or equal, in the art of linebacking is his own teammate, Cun ningham. Behind Wohrman there is the 220-pound "Total Power" Adams who seems to hold his own in the running, blocking, and defensive linebacking field. The Clemsonltes have good fullbackg in Crimmins Hankinson and Red Whitten with Bill O'Dell in when needed. "Good fullbacking" 18 not quite enough In this "T" formation type football, thus to rate the Birds a "wee bit" stronger here is a very safe move.. In summation we would like to say that the Tigers rate stronger than the Gamecocks at tackle, have more depth in the quarterback slot, and are even at halfback, but the ends, guards, center, and fullbaek slots have the power on the Gamecocks side of the fence. This may help to make the final score, 18-7. Carolina. In 1946 it was Fullback Bobby Giles that roared 62 yards for a touchdown early in the game to put USC on the way to a 26-14 win. Clemson rallied to lead, 14 12, later, but two touchdowns by Red Harrison put Carolina ahead to stay. Bishop Strickland, the stocky freshman halfback, launched the Gamecocks' 1947 triumph with a 38-yard touchdown run, and Quarterback Droopy Atwell and Giles scored later to make the final score, 21-19. Giles set up his touchdown by, intercepting Bobby Gage's pass on the Tiger 13. Carolina introduced a guy named Steve Wadiak in 1948, but Ironically the Gamecocks received their lone post-war defeat, despite the brilliant running of the boy from Chicago. Wadiak's touch down made it 7-6 in Carolina's favor in the final moments, but a blocked punt gave Clemson the winning touchdown, 13-7. The year 1949 saw Clemson as sume a 13-0 first quarter lead, but "Bo" Hagan, the quarterback who was a questionable starter, rallied to a perfect performance, passing for two touchdowns, as USC came back, 27-17. Wadiak's 60-yard kickoff return set up the first Gamecock score. It was all Wadiak in the 14-14 deadlock in 1950, as the "Cadillac" scored on runs of five and 70 yards. In all he gained 256 yards rushing that day to set a new conference record. Bill Stephens's 74-yard punt return put Carolina off to a merry lead in the 20-0 win in 1951. Center Harry Jabbush scored the final TD by grabbing one of Billy Hair's passes and running it back 13 yards. In 1952 a long pass from Quarterback Johnny Gramling to Halfback Gene Wilson gave USC a 6-0 win. Last year Gramling passed to End Clyde Bennett and Harold Lewis passed to End Joe Silas for touchdowns in a 14-7 trIumph. Tigers Take Cross Country Event, Sat. Clemson's cross-country team beat the Gamecocks in a team match held at Clemson Saturday by a 13-26 score. Carolina entered 10 men in the event and Clemson 12. The Gamecocks captured the number two and three positions, but Clem son captured one, four and five. Placing for Carolina were: Allen Inabinet, second; Sonny Wilcher, third; Freddie Roberts, sixth; Phillips, seventh; Arrants, thir teenth. R. E. Strickland, Chuck Hughes, Ron Oberle and Brown also ran for the Game cocks over the three-mile course. The team that finishes with the least numbor of points Is the win ner in a cross-country match.
