(Gamecock photo USC GetQ An unofficial weather station has been established on the campus through the cooperation of the United States Weather Bureau and the University's de partment of geology and geo graphy. The temperature and precipitation station, located out side of LeConte College, is being manned by members of the geol ogy and geography staff. The United States Weather Bu reau in an economy move several Math, English Study Classes Are Offered Tutorial services are again being furnished by the university in English and mathematics to stu dents who wish assistance in these studies. Mr. S. N. Hendley, tutor in mathematics, and Mr. J. Wil liams, tutor in English, will be available in the study rooms. The tutorial class in freshman English meets in the study room in the west building of the Univer sity Terrace Apartments and the freshman mathematics class meets in the study room in the central building. The study rooms are open from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Mon day through Friday. Early Applications Are Advised For Fulbright Awards Applications for Fulbright Scholarships should be completed within the next two weeks in order that members of the Committee on Student Fellowship Nominations may advise applicants where changes are necessary, Dean Wienefeld has announced. Fulbright scholarships are awarded to both men and women. Members of the 'teaching staff are eligible. The criteria of selection are as follows: academic ability (recom mended not less than a "B" aver age), knowledge of the United States and its policies on a wide range of domestic and foreign is sues, maturity, and self-reliance. Feild Announces Student Council Stand. Committees Standing committees of the Stu dent Council were appointed Mon day by Jack Feild, student body president. Named to the committee on so cial affairs were: Dan McIntyre, chairman; Frances Lumpkin, Dave Merline, Betsy Ehrhardt, and Verna Norton. Matthew Stephenson, who led the argument against the contro versial solon said far too many people were smeared and had their lives, reputations, and careers ruined by McCarthy's intimida tions under the cloak of congres sional immunity. Allen Tison, defending Mc Carthy, declared that it was a choice of fighting Communists at home with one man (McCarthy) or sacrificing the lives of Amer can youth on the battlefields of the world. Chaplain Brubaker Attends World Christian Meeting Chaplain Lauren E. Brubaker attended the World Student Chris tian Federation conference this< past summer at Evarqston, Illinois. W. Davis, tem porary president, said today. The club will consist of members of Sigma Xi from the University and in the Columbia area. Instal lation of the club is the first step toward chartering a chapter at the University. The program will feature an address on "The Science of Taste and Smell" by Dr. Henry Eyring, py,ofessor of chemistry and dean of the graduate school of the Uni versity of Utah. Dr. Eyring received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and holds honorary doc torates from the University of Utah and Northwestern. A spe cialist in the field of radio activ ity, the application of quantum Wel-hr.nics to chemistry and the theory of reaction rates, he is the co-author of three books and the author of more than 200 scientific papers and reports. National Magazine Contains Article By Coach Enright The current issue of the "Satur day Evening Post" includes a short article by Carolina Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Rex Enright entitled "The Greatest Player I Ever Coached." Coach Enright names the late Steve Wadiak as his greatest player in the article, one of a series published by' the Post and written by leading coaches throughout the country. Among the attributes possessed by Wadiak were a fine stiff arm, good speed and power, fine compet itive spirit and a real desire to become a good football player, Enright says. Wadiak played four years for the Gamecocks at left halfback, 1948-51, and led the team in rush ing yardage and in scoring all rour years. He scored a total of -5 touchdowns during his career ror a school record. He also holds the record for yaids gained rushing with 998 for me season, set in 1950, and 2,878 luring his career. Wadiak was killed in an automo bile crash early in 1952. His jersey, number 37, was re tired and is on display in the lobby of Maxey College together with mne of his game shoes cast in ironze. TV Show Oct. -24 On Local Station 'Ihe International Relations Club will conduct a. special television program on station WIS-TV Oc tober 24, Dr. John B. McConaughy of the political science department announced at the IRC's first meet ing last week. Dr. Conaughy, the club's spon eor, said the program would be hold in connection with United Nations Day and would, be in the form of a panel discussion. The topic of discussion has been an nounced as "United Nations Success or Failure?" Club mem bers who will appear on the pro gram will be announced at a later date and several foreign students are expected to appear as special guests. The IRC will meet this after noon at five o'clock in Building C and President Ben Bass has in vited all interested students to attend. Professor M. G.
