'It Was C Student ( On Trip (Story atued Pic.ur4 "It was great" was just about all that the 100 Carolina students who imade the trip to West Point had the energy to utter as their cup-littered train pulled into Co lumbia Sunday afternoon. Leaving Columbia Thursday at 4:30, the group embarked upon three days of activity which left little time for sleep. At 9:30 Fri lay morning their train emerged from under the Hudson River into Pennsylvania Station in New York. After registering in the Welling ton Hotel (five bocks from Times Square), most of the weary travelers took n. quicky shower and rest and were on their way to taste ,o,ie of the juicy-fruity of the bfig city. Not more than two or three Carolina students couhl he found anywhere around the Wellington at one time until the wee hours of the morning, when those who had gotten lost in the lights of the city or had drunk too deeply of its night life teetered In. Needless to say, many phones raig in many rooms for many miutes the next morning at 7:30 in the Wellington in the attempt to rouse Carolina's prides from their leaden slumbers. Here is what one group of 16 -tudents had done the night before: comman deering two Cadillac limousines with chauffeurs, the group set out to see the night spots of the big city; they "hit" Nick's, the Metropol. and Birdland (where their bill was $75); when they ran ,out of spots, they just had their chauffeurs drive them around the As Bear Mountain Lodge, wher hl fore the~ gamue, a pirc-game pep A gwonp of atudents on reat' Is onsensus to Game ax by Gus Manos) city; it was a perfect evening fo a drive, too, for it was clear an cool. Their total bill for theb adventure: $195. Three buses loaded with Game cocks left the Wellington at 9:3 in the morning for the magnificen drive along the cliffs of the Hud son River to the Point. On th way the group stolped at Bea, Mountain for their noon repas followed by a rousing pep rall: on the tender lawn of the massivt stone lodge. On up the Hudson fo five miles and there they were West Point and time for the bij upset. The story of the game is old hat by now, so it need not be repeated here. Before it was over many who had been cheering fo Army- were with Carolina Th cadets were stunned. The Game. cocks were overwhelmed with joN and pride. The Carolina team ha played some mighty massive ball and the time was ripe for mor celebration. Back to New York went our elated Gamecock-followers fol three more hours of the big city At 11:30 that night, loaded dowr with New York papers headlining the upset, they piled into their three special railroad cars for th, journey home. Seventeen hours later they were in Columbia and face to face with back assignments and impending quizzes again, but the general consensus was thai nothing could have taken the place of that trip.
