Birds I Finals Set '] USC- to De By JACK BASS The Gamecock track team feWtlts state title tomorrow field events beginning at 1:30 Trials will be held today E Last year the Gamecocks 66.2/5 to 54 2/5, with the de< vent of the day. W Carolina' has back three men who took firsts last year, as well as two double winners of previ ous years. Sonny Wilcher won the 440, Freddy Roberts the 880, and Joe Silas -the discus last year, all as freshmen. Roberts set a new record in the half-mile with a time of -1:57.5. Woodlee Back Tommy Woodlee, back from service, won the 100 and 220-yard dashes in 1950, tying the record in th100 with a 9.7 time. Garn McBride, injured last year, won the half-mile and mile runs in 1952. He will run the mile and two-mile this year. Wilcher, Roberts, and Leon Cun ningham were members of last year's winning mile relay team and will be joined by Wqodlee this year. Woodlee ran a leg on the 1950 milt relay team that holds the record in that event. Other top contenders for the Gamecocks include low hurdler Don Whetstone, who is unbeaten in dual competition this year in his specialty, and Gene Berry and Bobby Drawdy in the javelin. Records Threatened Several members of the Cairo lina team have been flitting around state record times during ,the regular season and possibly six mirks will be in jeopardy tomorrow. - Woodlee hasn't run under ideal conditions this year and stands a chance of setting new marks in both the 100 and 220. He has run bot5events during dual meets within a tenth of a second of the records. The records are 9.7 in the 100, set by Hutt of USC in 1934 and tied by Woodlee in 1950, and 21.6 in the 220, set by Scooter Rucks of USC in 1948. Another feature will be Wood lee's chance to avenge his only losses of the season in these events. P. C. freshman Delane Johnson edged Woodlee out in the firit meet of the season, but Tommy has clocked better times than Johnson since then. Baskin Picks Woodlee Coach Weems Baskin has given the opinion all season that his star would take Johnson in their return match. Baskin explained that it takes the older Woodlee longer to get in shape than it does Johnson. Roberts will be out to better his-record mark of last year. Ho ran the 880 in 1:57 in the Florida relays, half a second better than the record. Oarn McBride, one of the few seniors among the Gamecocks, has come with a second of the exist ing mile record and has bettered the two-mile mark in dual meets. Presbyterian's Bobby Vass may threaten the byoad jump mark of 28 fet 8 7/8 inches set by Banks Mce'cden 6f Clemson in 1940. Vass leaped 28-4% last year, but it did not stand as a record be Sause the landing pit was found to e lower than the jumping point. The Gamecocks have won 12 or 14 dual meets in the last two years, losing only to North Caro lina this year and to Duke in 1958. They have defeated Pres byterian, Duke, N. C. State, Davidson and The Citadel in a triangular meet, and Clemson this season. Probable Entrants Probable entrants for the Game cockB o~morrow will be Woodlee and Drawdy in the 100 a*d 220, Wilcher, Cunningham, and Whet stone in the 440, Roberts and Billy Kincaid in the 880, McBride and Jack Blair in the mile, McBride and Allen Inabinet in the two mile, Whetstone and Roddy Rob bins in the 220 low hurdles, Jack Martin in the 120 high hurdles, and a mile relay team composed of Wilcher, Roberts, Cunningham and Woodlee. In the field events it'll probably be Silas in the discus and shot put, Berry and Drawdy in the javelin, Berry and Jim Summer in the broad jump, Martin and Summer in the high jump, and Gene Blrown in the pole vault.
