Modernization Program The department's modernization program has already brought about tangible results in the form of more effective teaching and'pro luetive research by faculty mem biers and graduate students, Dr. Rogers saidl. For example, the Office of Ord aanee Research has negotiated a onltract with the University for 'i joint physics research project in the interest of the United States Army. Several faculty members are schieduiled to present papers at meetings of scientific organiza tions. At the meeting of the Southeastern Section of the Amer ican Physical Society in early April Dr. Rogers will give a paper in fluid dynamiics, and Prof. Charles Mercer and J. H. Williams >f Neese, departmental assistant, will present' a study on the seismol igical observatory at the univer sity. D)r. Rogers wvill also be on thie program of the national meet ng of the American Physical So iety at Washington in May. Among the faculty members who ire working with the new physics .ipmeintit are Mrs. M. C. Bate nan, assistant professor, who is nvest igating irradiated barium itanate. Dr. Paul H-. Pitkanen, in associate professor who joined he faculty this year, is carrying in studies of theoretical aspects of elativity. Francis Langford of Hlardeeville, graduiate student, is doing re earch for a thesis on diffusion in iquaids, andl Reuben T. Thornton, rIaduate student from Summer 'ille, is experimienting with neu rolls. "Tlhe newv equipment and ma erial4 make necessary certain ealth protection dlevices," Dr. ~ogers saidl. "Shielding bricks tnde of lead or iron are used to ormi a wall to pirotect those doing -esearch with radiioactivity. Strohecker, registrar, has announced. In this new sys tem the general catalogue will be reduced in size and will contain thirty pictures of university scenes. The general catalogue will be supplemented by bulletins depict ing the activities of the schools of the university. The bulletins which have already been printed are those of the school of engineering, school of journalism, school of pharmacy, and the school of law. Along with the general catal ogue, bulletins from the other schools will be ready in two weeks. These are the school of education, school of arts and sciences, school of business administration, grad uate school, summer school, and extension division. These school bulletins may be obtained from the deans of the various schools. includes a high resolution inter ferometer and a high resolution, stigmatic spectrograph. Both will be used by physics students to study light in order to learn about the properties and characteristics of atoms and molecules.
