Gameco Win Ovo Charlot By SONr Sports Carolina's 'Gamecocks sc4 within a period of three minut quarter Saturday afternoon -,Virginia Cavaliers in Charlott An estimated crowd of 12,000 spectators saw the Gamecocks hold the Cavaliers scoreless for the firsi time in 64 games. It was in 194( that Pennsylvania defeated Vir. ginia 40 to 0. Since that time the Virginians have scored in every ball game until they met the Gamecocks Saturday. The Gamecocks were not too im pressive during the first quarter of play. They let the CavalierR cAplete passes and their offense was held to a minimum. However, in the second period of play Johnny Gramling completed a 41-yard heave to end Spec Granger down to the Virginia 24. Mike Caskey, the unheralded halfback from Bennettsville, came through for a nifty touchdown run on the next play. Exactly two minutes and 40 seconds later, Captain Gene Wil son took a handoff from Quarter back Gramling, slipped through the right side of the Virginia line, and- galloped 69 yards to score, completely untouched during the jaunt. The first kick for extra point never got under way. Carl Brazell converted the only extra point of the game. It was Caskey again in a beau tiful 45-yard run to the Virginia 20 in the waning moments of the second quarter that set up the third and final Gamecock tally. *.rold Lewis, sub quarterback from Aynor, threw to diminutive Carl Brazell on the ten, who took the ball and with some fancy footwork completely fooled a Vir ginia defender and went over standing up. Brazell was hit by a would-be pass defender just prior to catching the touchdown pass, but gained enough momentum to stay on his feet and receive the ball. Statistically, the Gamecocks were obviously in command throughout the contest, and Rex Enright, head coach at the Univer sity, apparently went overboard to hold down the score. He sub stituted freely in the second half and gave both Harold Lewis and Bobby Shealy, second and third string quarterbacks respectively, a chance to show their ability. Mike Caskey was the leading ground gainer of the day for the Gamecocks as he ran six times for a 15.1 average. Captain WVilson averaged 11.7 times in seven car ries on the strength of his 69-yard run, and Jeepers Jeffcoat aver aged 9.6 in three carries. Gramling continued to spark the offensive play of the Gamecocks as he completed 5 of 12 passes for 71 yards. For the season, he has hit on 21 of 39 passes for an bgcuracy mark of 54 per cent. This was the Gamecocks second wvin of the season as compared with one loss. They bowed to the /')efforts of the Duke Blue Devils in the opener of the season, 20-7, and whipped the Bulldogs from the Citadel, 25-0. After gaining the fairly easy win over the Virginians, the Game cocks look forward to the Furman meeting in Carolina Stadium to morrow after-noon at 2:30 P.M. The superb performance of the Carolina forward wall Saturday in their 19-0 victory over Virginia in Charlottesville can be attrib uted partly to the coaching of hefid line coach Hank Bartos.
