Somebod On Cut Last spring, a committee of the student faculty relations committee was appointed to revise the cut system with the misgiven idea that harsher attendance rules would raise the scholastic average of the -student body. That committee spent several weeks draw ing up a proposed system that would reduce the student's unexcused absences in a class from six to four. That part of the proposal was for the common mass of the student body. The one-sixth of the student body whose scholastic average was 3.00 or better was given "unlimited" cuts. Another part of the proposal was to give excuses for one-day illnesses, whereas under the old plan a stu dent had to miss three or more days of classes. The plan was jammed through, without a vote by the student body; without even a consultation with the student body. It is true that there were students on the committee but they all ate humble pie in the presence of the sage faculty members. All but two of the committee stood still while the plan was passed through the student-faculty relations committee, then on to the faculty itself where it slipped through faster than Carl Brazell on a quickie. The students were incensed but figured with the one-day sickness excuse they would be able to meet their emergencies with four cuts and then take care of any slight or sud Sprinkle: To Be I Long advocated by the Gamecock was.. some method of insuring the university buildings so that the student and his property could be protected from fire and theft. Now the administration has begun a program to provide more protection from fire, thus lowering insurance rates so that each building can be insured individually. Sprinklers are now being,installed in each of the older buildings on the horseshoe. They weren't happy but as in most of the decisions passed down they reluctantly agreed to it. Those who had "unlimited" cuts weren't satisfied with the system either since they found out too late that the unlimited cuts were in reality no more than under the old system since they would be cut out if they missed more than 25 per cent of the class meetings, in the average three credit course about 12 cuts. The system went into effect this fall. At such an early period in the term most students have not had occasion to cut more than once or twice. Therefore, they haven't found out yet that when they go to get the old one-day sickness excuse that they will be told they have to miss three class days before they can get an excuse. While we haven't written proof that the new system called for one-day sick excuses, we feel certain that the student body was led to believe that one-day excuses would be al lowed. At least that was the impression gained by the Gamecock for it ran a story last year stating that one-day absences for sickness would be allowed. Cutting down on the number of unexcused cuts may conceivably have been a good idea. But disallowing sick excuses at the same time is making it rather hard for most stu dents. Especially when these excuses were originally promised.-RNG r System nstalled .College. They are installing sufficient sprinklers to prevent the outbreak of fire, or at least to convince the underwriters of the safety of the buildings. A fire in Tenement 29 last semester dam aged several hundred dollars worth of a student's clothing. A potential disaster was prevented when the occupants of the room awoke in time to prevent the blaze from spreading. However, we will print no letter that is "Still trying to get a (late wit FARIS GILES A Look to Amid all the clamoring blasts and harangues published in last week's Gamecock, this columnist feels that someone somewhere is due a little praise. In the telephone situation, we indeed have a problem. This is granted. It is a problem because it concerns every student on the Carolina campus. Eventually, this problem will be alleviated. Let's look now at status quo here at USC. Things aren't so bad as others would have us think. We have not reached the celestial heights that UNC has reached, we are told. Our enrollment and physical plant cannot yet compare with those of our sister state in stitution to the North, they tell us. This writer feels that whatever the status of the two schools may be, USC is in a very favorable position. We must head in but one direction and that is upward. We have yet to reach the zenith of our development. President Russell realizes this, for we see that the administration is plap ning a gigantic building program which we read about in this paper each week. This building program may, in the long run, affect each of us more than this telephone does. This program is not restricted to the building up of our physical plant, but it takes in the progres sive improvement of our faculty, by the addition of outstanding men of learning. We have read in the Gamecock of the soon-to-be Collegiate BOSTON, MASS. - (I.P.) - Northeastern University will re ceive $3,000 from the Bethlehem Steel Company for each graduate of the university that the com pany hires for its annual training program for college students, ac cording to the contents of a letter received here from E. G. Grace, chairman of the company. It is the company's aim to provide fi nancial assistance to selected colleges in return for value re ceived. The company feels that if in dustrial progress is to continue, there must be more educated men and that the universities must be the ones to supply them. This Grace plan will go into effect this year and the company hopes that It will continue for years to come. Northeastern University was one of forty-three universities and colleges selected from those in the Unitedi States At NU the company will select students from all three (lay colleges with slight emphasis on engineering studeonts. The Bethlehem Steel Company normally selects 100 men for their training program which is known as the Bethlehem Loop Course. It is here that they receive their preliminary training which is designed to acquaint them with the business, and thereby enable them to advance to higher posi tions. HAYS, KANS. - (I.P.) - The crowded lines and long waiting periods traditionally accompany ing enrollment days at Fort Hays Kansas State College were shor tened this year by joint action of the Student Council and Regis trar's Off ice. Last spring the council came up with the follow ing solution for improving the enrollment system here. A clock was -wound up tight and the face lettered with the alphabet divided into eight see tions as nearly equal as possible. The council decided that wherever the hour hand pointed when the clock ran down, the students whose names begin with that correspond ing group of letters wulds be the IL , your girl out at C square?" the Future constructed, much-needed Student Union Building which will cost more than one million dollars. We are informed that twenty-five new professors have been added to the faculty. The tenements on the horseshoe are being completely renovated, and the University Terrace Apartments have been purchased for use as freshmen dormitories. In the near f6ture a new girls' dormitory, an audi torium, and other buildings are to be built. Already, the unattractive temporary buildings, for the most part, have met their just end. This building program of both a physical and an intellectual na ture will perhaps affect our future here at Carolina and afterwards much more than the fact that we are compelled temporarily to lo cate a pay telephone to make a call out into town. As I stated once before, the telephone problem will certainly be alleviated as soon as possible. In the scheme of things, it is but a minute headache which occurs when great progress is in the making. President Russell is a man of foresight and action. We are indeed fortunate to be led by a man who has the capability of seeing much further than the tip en( of his nose. Patience asserts itself as a timely virtue. Through patience and cooperation, we can do much in aiding the Administration realize the ultimate destiny of USC. Clippings first to enroll. The groups now have a half-hour betwveen each section, which allows sufficient time for everyone to secure class slips, without waiting in line all morn ing, Dalton said. Also included in the new plan is the use of en rolling permits. Each student is given in advance, a card with his name, classification, and day and hour of enrollment. He must pre sent this card at the door of the registration arena for permission to enter the arena. IGNORANT TEACHERS BOSTON, MASS.-(I.P.)--The average teacher's "blissful ignor ance" of current educational and psychological research and the lack of ability to sift out signifi cant discoveries, that have definite educational value, causes a lag of 30 to 40 years between early knowledge and actual classroom use of new Leaching techniques and tools, according to Dr. William C. Kvaraceus, Boston University professor of education. "Most classroom teachers' con tacts with research findings are through delayed secondary sources," -he said, "without the teacher's awareness of the second hand nature of this reporting or through 'interpreters' who are found in large numbers on summer session campuses." This lag prevented for many years the general use of such tools as intelligence tests, standardized achievement testa, audio-visual aids andi the unitary approach to learning, in sharp contrast to "the ready acceptance and use of peni cillin and aureomycin, which have become household words over night." He had an important message to deliver at that place and he knew the ride would be a long one, so he was starting before dawn. It had only been a short time that Sir Newton was forced to ride the many leagues to Ashen. Bofore that time all the knights had been able to send their messages by the drums that were now used only for communication inside the castle. The king had ordered that use of the drum system be limited to the castle yard. To deliver a message or receive one from another lord's castle the knights had to ride to the place and deliver the message in person. Messages from the other manors could be sent by drur* all they pleased but communications experts here at Socar simply refused to receive the message. They informed the other manor by drum, the only time the drums were used for outside communique, that they would have to send the message personally. Of course, very often the messengers came to Socar and used the drum system to transmit their message throughout the castle. Oce they got that near, however, they usually contacted their party and delivered the message personally.
