13 Lettermen Lost for '53; 25 Return The 1953 Gamecock football team will begin their season in September minus the able services of 13 lettermen. These men have all played a prominent role in Gamecock victories through the years, but have completed their eligibility. However, with 26 lettermen returning on the scene for another year, prospects cer tainly cannot be said dismal. 1952 lettermen lost through graduation were as follows: Ends: John Latorre, Charleston; Walt Shea, Brooklyn, N. Marylandl's well-balanced team won its third consecutive outdoor title, piling upI 58%' points. They took five first lafces out of a possible fourteen. Joe Shankle, Duke's star sopho more, piled up 23 p)oints to enable the Blue D)evils to take secondl place with 41% points, nosing out third p)lace North Carolina, wvhich Picked up 40%. Shankle won the broad jump and the 120-yardl high hurdles and tied for first place in the high jump and pole vauilt, whiie finishing sec oral in the 220-yard lowv hurdlles. District Chairman Walter Rabb of the University of North Caro lina said his committee hopes to have four teams in the playoffs, scheduled June 1-5, with a double elimination plan tentatively ar ranged. These teams will be selected at a meeting of the com mittee in Charlotte on May 24. Southern and Southeastern con ference division playoffs will be held prior to the committee meet ing. Rabb says the champions of these two conferences will be in vited as two of the participating teams. Two outstanding indepen dent teams will round out the quartet, if they are available. The two top teams in each the Southern and Northern divisions of the Southern Conference will com pete in this event, sched'uled at Raleigh June 14-16, the winner tc go to Charlotte. Meanwhile la1yoffs will be held in the Southeastern Conference with Georgia, Florida and Missis sippi State among the favorites. In all sports the Gamecocks won nine and lost but four to the up state Tigers. Of course, the biggest thrill for these supporters came during the "Big Thursday" football game, when Carolina won 6-0 for its fifth post-war win in that series against one loss and' a tie. The Tigers managed splits with the Gamecocks in basketball, base ball, and golf, but Carolina took all meetings in football, swimming. Itennis, and track. Following is the 1952-'53 record of Carolina-Clemson sports meet ings, with the Gamecock won-lost record in parentheses: Football (1-0). USC 6, Clemson 0. Basketball (1-1). The ultimate winner will be in vited to take part in the NCAA district playoffs. Rollins College has made one of the most outstanding records among the independent teams in the district. Chairman Rabb has written to all eligible schools to post their season's records with his commit tee for consideration at the May 26 meeting. Plans are already going forward for the playoffs at Charlotte with Bob Allen heading up local ar rangements.
