Gamecocks Bat Game. Time lohnny Ray "We'll do better than we did last year, you can bet that." These words could apply to practically all spring sports, but it so happens that they are the words of Coach Weems Baskin, mentor of the track team, as he looked over the team a week or so ago. We had just walked over from the intramural de partment, home of the three musketeers--Salley, Cash, and Little-and, knowing that some kind of statement would be forthcoming from the coach, became engaged in an elite con versation on that elite topic which Coach Baskin naturally holds in very high esteem-track. "We won't know just how we rate with other teams until we begin to compete; it all depends on where their strength lies. If they're strong in the events in which we hold our strength, naturally we won't look as good. We'll have more strength than last year as a whole," Baskin observed as he watched a couple of his runners dash by. When asked how about Bobby Drawdy and Garn McBride, two of last year's specialists in the 100-yard lash and half-mile run, Baskin replied, "Well, McBride is looking good, as usual, and Drawdy has been hampered a little with an injured leg, but I think they'll be going strong by the time we meet Duke." Time has proven that the coach knew what hq was talking about. In Tuesday's meet with Duke Drawdy won the 100-yard dash in 10.2 seconds, placed second in the 220 and third in the javelin throw. MacBride placed second in the mile run and third in the 880. Freshman Sonny Wileher of Macon, Ga., however, was the top scorer for the Birds. Wilcher took first places in the 440 and 220-yard (lashes and seemed to be in excellent condition. Track fans will be hearing more from this freshman if his first appearance here has any significance. STOPPED-ONE RUMOR For the second time in as many semesters the rumor of dropping boxing has circulated in, and around the campus. One such rumor reached us and, investigating, we found that no such action has been taken. We phoned Coach Enright at his home Wednesday evening and without hesi tation he answered, "That's just. another rumor. There's absolutely nothing to it. In fact, we are already in the process of making out next year's schedule." However sincere the efforts on the part of fans and coaches may be. however, it seems to us that college boxing is on its way out. Strangulation was applied when Maryland and Virginia decided not to accept the SI BT invitations. Since 1945 college boxing has decreased tremendously. It was around '45 that Duke anl North Carolina decided to drop boxing and Clemson gave up the ghost after '48. The Citadel has retained a team along with Carolina, but. Virginia and Maryland seem to have lost interest and it may very well be that deemphasis such as which we have seen (luring this past year will be the pall-bearer for some teams. No tears, please; death may not come within the next year. Certainly if interest at other schools equalled the interest shown by Carolina students there could be a re julvenation of the manly art. If there is no rejuvenation, then it appears that college boxing will either b)e only a memory within a few y-ears, or will assume an intramural status. Shankle won the high juinp. broad jump, both hurdles, and tied with Smokey Darouse and Gene Robinson of Carolina in the pole-vault. For Carolina Freshman Sonny Welcher of Macon, Ga. was the big point maker, taking first places in the 440 and 220-yard dashes. Gene Berry won the javelin con test for the Gamecocks throwing it 174 feet, four inches. Bobby Drawdy also won first in the 100 yard dash, finishing in 10.2 seconds. The closest and perhaps most exciting event of the day was the two-mile run. Rounding the last lap, Carolina's Jack Blair made his bid and advanced from a long third position to finish only a yard behind Duke's Morton in a race which would have put Caro lina out front. The team performance pleased Carolina coaches and the Game cocks are eyeing a winning season and perhaps a state championship. The teams will meet for the finale of a two-game set Ace righthander Otis Rawl for the Gamecocks Friday and a hander, Heyward Tunstall, ma; Saturday. Thus far, in intra-squad gan been weak, and the main hope the pitching and defensive unit sent some bf the most highly re ence to the mound only to have Gamecock hitting power. Rawl, who led the pitching staff last year with a 5-1 record, is backed by returnees Heyward and Howard Tunstall, the Darlington twin combo, Johnny Gramling, and Gene Molnar. A lefthander, Billy Frierson, has been added this season and has been pleasing in practice. Experience is prevalent through out most of the lineup, but only shortstop Tom Hofferth and pitcher Rawl can show respectable batting averages. Hofferth led the hitters with a .322 clip last year while Rawl pounded at a .310 mark. The rest of the line-up is not certain, but a likely lineup is Al Spotts of Newberry at first base, Jimmy Cox of Camden at second, Bill Wohrman from Bloomingdale, N. J. at third, and either Jimmy Fraser, Carl Brazell, or Fred Duckett starting behind the plate, Fraser likely getting the nod. There is considerable uncer tainty as to who will handle duties in the outfield but from all indica tions Haynie Floyd will be in left field, Lynwood Floyd in center, and Jim Bradley in right field.
