Coach Baskin said that he didn't take them to get points but, rather, to get some much needed ex perience. Garn McBride, outstanding miler for USC, ran a 4:29 mile but this feat won him only a fourth place. - This is as good a mile as McBride ran at the close of the season last year, and taking into consideration that none of the Gamecocks have run indoors and that they are not in the best condi tion, this was a good performance. Jack Blair, two-miler, ran a 10:26 two mile, but was unable to -place. This was almost as good as his best time of last year. Freddy Roberts ran a 2:01 half-mile bwt was unable to qualify for the finals. Sonny Welcher, a quarter miler met the same fate, he failed to qualify in the 440 even though he ran a 53 second quarter. But at least he has one consolation, the boy that beat him went on to win the event in the finals. Pole-vaulters Smoky Darouse and Gene Brown vaulted 11'6" and 11' respectfully. Brown, a member of the '48 track team, has just returned from service and hasn't gotten back into the swing of things. Summers and Martin highjumped 5'11" and 5'10" before being eliminated. Bobby Drawdy and Gene Berry have been looking good in recent workouts with the javelin. Drawdy is also the only experienced sprin ter returning from last year's squad. Joe Silas and Joe Defore have been working out with the shot put and discuss, but the lack of sprinters is handicapping the team. A cry is being issued by Coach Baskin. WANTED: Sprinters for the track team. If you have ever run before or if you like to run, report to Coach Baskin on Davis Field any afternoon at 3 o'clock. If he gets a couple of good sprinters the Gamecocks can field a good track team. So don't let - the Gamecocks down. Report at once to Coach Baskin.
