Cagers ( With 1 An inexperienced and unproven Carolina basketball team will Lke to the court Saturday night when the Newberry Indians invade the University of South Carolina Field House in the opening game of the season fpr the Gamecocks. The hopes for this year's team will be carried largely by several newcomers who will be striving to fill the gaps left by the loss of such key players as Dwane Morri son, Don Cox, and Mickey Best. Morrison was the team's high scorer last year, averaging 19.8 points a game. The three together accounted for a total of 38.7 pointa per game last season. Actually, Coach Frank Johnson wvill have only one regular consis tent starter from last year, six feet, four inch Center Johnny Peterson who averaged 14.9 points per game last season. However, Joe Smith and Tom Hofferth, who al ternated in one forward position last season, have some valuable experience and both have good height at six feet, three inches. Other squad members who will be ready for action Saturday night are: Center Jim Gainey (6'8"), Guard Jack Wise (5'11"), Guard Frank Wrighat (5'10"), Guard Randy Coleman (6'2"), and For ward Bob Finley (6'1"). Gainey, whose inexperience limited his ac tion last year, has been steadily improving and should see plenty action in Saturday's game. Cole man, who played guard position behind Best and Cox last season, will probably be in for a busy night also. The newcomers to the squad are comparatively tall and have a great deal of spirit at this early stage. All of the new members have had good high school rocords and have shown up good in prac tice sessions. However, the predic tions should be left off until the boys have been seen In action. The leading members among the newcomers are Forward Art Semejkal (pronounced "smichael"), Guard Jack Hufford, Center Lee Collins and Guard Jack Neeley. Semejkal Is six feet, three Inches tall, Hufford is five feet, nine inches, Collins Is six feet, six inches, and Neeley stands six feet, one inch. In the opener Saturday night Coach Johnson's probable lineup will be Smith and Hofferth at for wards, Peterson at center, and Coleman and Hufford at the guard p)ositions. Newberry, whose basketball t'eams have constantly threatened Within the Little Four realm, will have three returning lettermen. They are Center Ed Blanko, (6'8"), P'orward Bobby Bailey (6'0"), and Guard Bob not (5". i's Volleyba] e ? 4 4 J the Sigma Chi volleyball team v to right) Don Cox and Jimmy Cox. redie, Elmore Viele, Dicky Timms, )pen Vewberry Other returning members of the Indian squad include George Rushe, Ed Hester, Pete Stoude mire, Billy Leitner, Buzzie Hentz, and Hubert Morris. The Newberry team should be really out to win this game against a larger and mythically stronger powered team such as Carolina. Likewise, the Gamecocks will be out to make a good showing in their opener and to do the same thing as they did last year when they trounced them 84-40. However, it Is .doubtful whether the Gamecocks can equal last year's team in the win column. The 1951-52 team won 14 and lost 10 Last year the Gamecocks de feated The Citadel, Newberry, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Davidson, Georgia, Clemson, Virginia Tech, George Washington, North Caro lina and lost games to Georgia Tech, Davidson, Pennsylvania, N. Among the proposals likely to cause dissention is the plan pro posed by conference Commissioner Wallace Wade by which a player who has graduated from a secon dary school and has agreed to re ceive financial aid from a confer ence college will not be eligible to play at another conference school under financial aid.
