The Science Building al ("Lily" Wen-pei Li Li Wen-Pei knd America By Mickey Young "Lily" Wen-Pei Li, the Chinese xchangc student attending Caro ina this year, was born in Peiping, 'hina. Maarch 27, 1931. The name .ily was adopted by Wen-pei for he convenience of Americans who annot pronounce her Chinese anie. Li is her family name or ist name, and is written first :hen written in Chinese. Arrival in U. S. W en-pei came to this country by lane and landed in San Francisco n August 22, this year. She was npressed by the hospitality of iv people. The first thing that ily noticed when she arrived on e Carolina campus was the s milarity of the buildings and L mpus to the university in Tai- 1 an. She also noticed that "the fl merican boys are not as reserved t] the Chinese." She added that " first she had trouble remember- F g names of all the students and C veryone looked exactly alike." E 'hen I asked her about the foot ill games she had seen she said, was very excited along with eryone else but I didn't under and the game." Main Hobbies When it conies to hobbies, Lily kes to go window shopping in olumbia in her free time. She Iso likes classical music and ainting. When asked what she lans to do after finishing her ear at Carolina, Lily replied "I Pou!d like to return to China to anlchI." Traiwan Univ. Later in college at Taiwan she was instructed by two American )rofessors and several Chinese nstructors. Also included in her )ackground of American learning vere several American friends, who spoke both Chinese and ,nglish. When I asked her about novies I found that Lily has seen nany. both American and British. 'wo which she mentioned as out tanding were "King's Row" and Hamlet."
