Hollar's black suede, windbreaker style, will knock your eyes out. OR MAYBE HAVE YOU NOTICED .. . Betty Barton in a hat at ,he Music Strictly Off The Record By MICKEY YOUNG I'm back again with more music, history, and the latest hit tunes in Columbia. I suppose by now every one is settled down to the old grind of school again, so first of all I'll tell you about some nice quiet music that is guaranteed not to disturb you . . . Just released by Capitol, this long-playing record should head your list of "What I want for Christmas" or "The first thing I'm going to spend my allow ance on." Nat "King" Cole's album entitled "Penthouse Serenade," which includes such tunes as... "Laura," "Somebody Loves Me," "Rose Room" and "Once In A Blue Moon." Another good album, just issued b)y Coral, is "Musical Weather Vane," by Les Brown. This is said to b)e the finest album turned out by a dance band this year. Some of the tunes... "Cloudy," "R ain," ' ' S t o r m y Weather," "Blue Skies." Now for some history . . . Prob ably one of the most well-known "genius' " in the field of Jazz, Duke Ellington, is celebrating 26 years of success. D)uke Ellington was born in April, 1899, Edward Ken nedy Ellington. He began playing the piano at the age of seven, and in 1916 secured his first profes sional job p)laying the piano five hours for 76 cents. Duke opened at the Cotton Club in D)ecember, 1927, and since that time has made some terrific recordings, played for mil lions of people, and has been a big success. Some of the Duke's best recordings are . . . "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," "Solitude,"~ "Take The 'A' Train," and "Ring Dem Bells." "Lady of Spain" by Eddie Fisher and "Because You're Mine" by Nat "King" Cole are both "top tunes" for the week. I know everyone has heard that "record???" "It's In The Book," so I won't cast any opinions. "Setting the Woods on Fire" by Jo Stafford and Frankie Laine is way up on the list of good pop tunes, and so is the flip side "Piece A-Puddin'." Be listening for Louis Arm strong's latest release "Takes Two to Tango." It's a good record, com Plete with Armstrong's usual trumpet Rolo and cute lyrics. 'Til next week then . . . happy listening! nsors cheer wildly as Carolina scores.
