Leon ti Leon Cunni As Carolina Ieon Cunningham, Carolina's ubiquitous linebacker, didn't re ceive many pats on the back when the pre-season all-state, Al-South E"rn and All-America mentions were being handed out, but since the actual playing began he has jumped to the forefront as one of the nation's best linemen. Next Thursday, October 23, when the Gamecocks meet arch rival Clemson here, Cunningham will be celebrating the first anni versary of his "coming out" party. It was in that game that he play ed a major role in completely frustrating the Tiger offense, as USC won by 20-0, and for his play he was voted the Southern Con ference "freshman of the week." Later in the season Leon receiv ed a leg injury that required an operation, so his damage to the opposition was side-tracked tem porarily. During the spring Cunningham helped put the sstrength back into his legs by running the 220-yard dash on the track team, along with a lap of the mile relay team. Coach Rex Enright conside Cunningham already as good linebacker as he has ever coache and with two years for improv ment ahead, he may soon impro, on that. Leon looks more like an end, position he played some at Smi High School in Atlanta, Ga., stan ing six feet, one inch and weig ing 190 pounds. However, 1 tackles savagely, never qui hustling and follows defensi signals to the letter, all of whii are characteristics that establi him as a star. C. unrwlers For Men Backs n GENE WILSON Gene Wilson was the understudy to the late Steve Wadiak last sea son but this year has come into his own. At the end of last sea son he took over as the regular right halfback and gained 240 yards in 62 tries for a 3.8 average. Along with three touchdowns. Vir ginia voted Gene to their All-Op ponent team after their 28-27 win over the Gamecocks. This season, Gene leads the Gamecocks in rushing yardage with 194 in 57 tries for an average of 3.4 yards per try. In the pass ing department, five tries and four completions have given Gene a gain of 32 yards. He also has 2, caught seven passes for a total of 47 yards. Gene is a junior from Fayette in ville, N. C. where he first gained notice as a football player. He was in on the North Carolina Shrine Bowl team in 1949. At Carolina, Gene is in the Air Force ROTC unit n- majoring in business administra tion. k HOOTIE JOHNSON Last season, William Woodward ), "Hootie" Johnson was the regular right halfback, gaining 224 yards for a 2.7 average. Hootie's biggest drawback last season was the old disease of fumblitis. This season, the menace is almost cured. To a very large extent, last season's ex perience was t.ho medicine needed. This season, Hootie has gained 74 yards in 24 tries for an average of 3.1. In these two games his passing was as good as any in the South although he tappered off quite a bit against Duke, com pleting only seven passes out of 20 attempts. Before that game he had completed 21 of 40 for an average of .525, which i quite commend able. Totaling all four games to gether he has completed 28 passes out of 60 attempts for an average of .467, 332 yards and five touch downs.
