South Caroline "South Carolina in the Short Story," edited by Katharine M. Jones and Mary Verner Schlaefer, will be presented by the University Press this week. This collection of sixteen stories by prominent South Carolina writ ers of the present day presents a cross-section of life when con sidered geographically, and covers the publication period of approxi mately the last thirty years. Mrs. Schlaefer is a native Co lumbian who has written for maga zines and who is at present a mem ber of the faculty of the English department at the university. She is married to Dr. E. M. Because of this, she decided to write the book. Miss Jones, a native of Green. ville, is at present a member of the staff of Winthrop College, and one of the principal reasons for her interest in this volume is the demand for short stories by South Carolina authors which she has found in her library work. Miss Jones and Mrs. Schlaefer have spent several years in secur ing the stories and arranging them for publication.
