One of the most ardent sports fans on the campus asked to be allowed to express his opinion on one of the gripes that he has concerning Carolina basketball games. After such eloquent pleas we were forced to give him space to print his views. He wishes to remain anonymous. So be it. "Only God can referee . . ." .ran a poem printed in this column several weeks back. We're broadminded, too, and like the author of that poem, we can see that it would take a superhuman being to get through a basketball game without stirring up a little ill will from time to time. But from the refereeing we've been seeing lately in the Field house, we've come to the conclusion that it is high time Southern. conference refs put in their bids for a little divine guidance. It's clear they need help, and while they'rr tryjng to get it, they may as well try for the best. Even if superhuman effort is iiedd to turn in an all-satisfying job in the officiating' department, it is equally clear that only subhuman effort can produce the constant careless boners committed in action by these carefully trained stripe-shirters, who are not only guilty of mental and observational lapses (when they completely fall to notice a rules infraction), but seem also to distribute their fouls arbitrarily during what seem like crowd-pleasing, coach-pleasing, and team-. pleasing spells. It is hard for us to believe that these men-whom we accuse after long frustration of the Impulse-are ignorant of either the rules or their duties to the game that affords them a fine wintertime income. On the other hand, it is impossible for us to accuse them of moral or ethical delinquency. This alone can we say: It is spiritual emphasis week in Columbia, and if you wear a striped shirt and a whistle around your neck on basketball nights, make the most of the opportunities the week suggests. STRETCH DRIVE The next two weeks will be the most important of the season to .the Gamecocks as far as a berth in the tourney is concerned. Beginning with George Washington Tuesday night the Birds have eight consecutive conference games. Going into the conference tourney with less than a .500 mark is pretty improbable. The.Gamecocks had a 5-2 mark before the George Washington affair so they need at least three wins to finish with more wins than losses. The opposition for the rest of the season will be plenty rugged and those three wins may be hard to get. Furman last night will be followed by North Carolina, Davidson, Wake Forest, Duke, Wake Forest again and Clemson. Only two of the remaining games will be at home, Davidson and Wake Forest. The Gamecocks have already beaten both these teams but Wake Forest has greatly improved since early season and has twice beaten the North Carolina five. D)avidson shouldn't prove too difficult unless the Game cocks hit an extremely bad night. Two wins over Wake Forest coupled with a win over Davidson would almost insure a ticket to the conference tourney. That doesn't mean that the other games are necessarily lost already. With a team that shoots as well as the Game cocks on certain nights it wouldn't be too much of an upset to beat any of the other teams. They can't afford to stumble over a weaker team, however. JUST CHECKIN' .. . Jack Hale, sophomore from Greenville, had won every evenft that he had entered as a swimmer before yesterday's meet with Florida. A distance man, Hale won his first eight entries .. . Jim Slaughter has caught on with the Baltimore Bullets of the National Basketball association's Eiastern dlivision. The Miamians have rhneidenbach, Jimmy Bernardo, Lee Sports quiz The last Sportsquiz seemed to give most of the students a bum steer since they went overboard for Sherman White. The question was to name the first basketball player indicted in the bribery scan dals. The correct answer was Ed Warner of CCNY. White was the answer given by most of the en trants. The only two answers naming Warner were received at the same time so we had to draw one of the names from a hat. Rondel Tarte was the lucky man and he won two passes to the Carolina Theatre. William Bragden was the other man with the right answer. We shift from basketball to track this week for our Sportsquiz subjwt. Only three men have ever been over the 15-foot .mark as pole vaulters. Track Team Planned Here All students who wish to try out for the Carolina track team are urged to report to the Field house at 1:15 Monday afternoon. Coach Weems Baskin is rebuilding a track team after a year's layoff and the positions are wide open. Anybody with legs strong enough to carry him around the track is urged to try out. The last Carolina track season was 1950 when the Gamecocks won the state championship. They return home for a match with the Univer sity of Miami next Thursday night. Most of the Maryland fighters are first year men and little is known of their ability since they have had only one bout. In a match with The Citadel last week the Terrapins were held to a 4-4 draw. Most impressive of the Terps were Jack Latzer, 126 pounds, and Bob Theofield, 139 pounds. Both these men won their bouts against The Citadel via the TKO route. The other Maryland winner was Bill McInnes of the 156-pound class who got a decision. Ronnie Rhodes, 165, and Calvin Quinstedt, un limited, both received a draw. Dave Shaffer, Gary Fisher, and Jim Stewart complete the Mary land lineup. Carolina won over the Terps last year, 6-2, and have virtually the same team. The Gamecocks won over Vir ginia, 5%-2%, last weekend at Virginia. Emmett Gurney was the top man for Carolina as he got a TKO over his opponent, Grice Whitely, in the second round. Chuck Spann floored his man, too, but had to settle for a decision. Chuck Davis was held to a sur prise draw in the best fight of the I night. The only losses were by i Don Fortner, who lost by only one I point to Virginia's top - rated I Lighter, and Jack Cassidy. Miami is expected to offer stronger opposition than either Maryland or Virginia. The Game eocks won last year's match, 4% 31%2, but the Miamians have a squad of experienced men returning. They have had two matches al ready, winning one and losing one. They beat the Virginia team, 6-3, and lost to perennially powerful LSU, 3%-4%. Mickey Demos is the 126-pound entry and is one of the top men on the Miami squad. He lost only one regular season bout last year and is in his third varsity ring season. He, along with Lee Heartling, 147 pounder, and Jimmy Bernardo should provide the most trouble. Demos has won both his bouts. Bernardo is a 155-pounder and is a brother of Carl Bernairdo, who was a 175-pound national inter collegiate champ. Heartling is a newcomer but holds a decision over Whitely of Virginia, the same man that Gurney teed off. He lost a gainst LSU.
