RALPH GREGORY, Sports Editor Mike Lovejoy Irv Liskov Bill Liggett Murry Seaman RALPH GREGORY: Hi, Sport! The key to what little success the basketball Gamecocks have had up to now has been the ability to make shots from the outside. The Johnsonmen have one of the best shooting teams in the conference. With the lack of rebounding so noticeable they have to shoot well if they expect to win. When other teams shoot they have a chance to grab the rebound and try again. If they miss the second time they still grab the rebound. Clemson had five shots on one play last Tuesday. On the fifth pushup they made the goal. Not so Carolina. The shooting has been phenomenal so far. Carolina has been hitting better than 40 per cent of its shots in many games. Even with a few bad evenings they are still near the 40 per cent mark. Last year's team hit only 36.3 per cent. This ability to hit the hoop has paid off with a 71.3 points per game, almost five points better than last year's team. Had they hit 71 points in every game last year the Game cocks would have lost only four times. MORRISON UPS TEAM CHANCES It's bad to have to rely on one man to pull the whole team along but that's about the story as far as Dwane Morrison is concerned. In the first 12 games this year Morrison has gone over the 20 point mark eight times. Of the four games that he fell under the 20 mark the Gamecocks dropped three. When Morrison is hot the whole team seems to catch fire. Against Clemson Tuesday he was held to nine points in the first half. That's not a bad total but he had made only two shots from the floor. Immediately after the recess the Tigers broke a 38-38 tie and ran up a four point lead. Cox hit a long set shot and Morrison went to work. He hit from the corner, got two on a driving lay-in, hit another iump shot and added a free throw, all within three minutes. During the rest of the quarter he hit another jump and another short shot. Eleven points in the third quarter and enough to spark the Gamecocks to pull ahead with some great shooting from outside and win by six points. The most futile game that Carolina has played this year was the game against Davidson in the Carolina's Invitational. That was Morrison's lowest total of the year, only eleven points. SWIMMERS DROP CLOSE ONE Jimmy Ratliff is probably wondering what a coach has to do to get his team on the winning end these days. His swim mers lost to Clemson last weekend 44-40. The tough part about losing the match is that a miscalculation by one of the Carolina men cost the team a first place in the medley relay and therefore the match. The Clemson pool is shorter than the local one and when one of the entrants pulled up at what he thought was the finish he was considerably ahead of the nearest Tiger. The only catch was that the Carolina swimmer had another lap to go. By the time he caught his error it was too late and the Tigers had taken the event and enough points to make the difference in the final outcome. The swim team now has two losses but are very optimistic about the remaining schedule. The second semester will find one of the best college divers this writer has ever seen become eligible. "Poss" Clement put on an exhibition from the high board during the meet with Davidson and direw the approval of everybody in the natatorium that day for his neatly executed series of twists and flips. The Game cocks already have one good diver in Winter Kimes and should run 1-2 with these two boys on the boards. 'Jack Hale, distance swimmer, is one of the top swimmers on the squad. He seems to be tireless on the long, free-style events. So far he has pulled away from each contestant he has met. Here's the remaining schedule meets: Jan. 19 The Citadel, there Feb. 2 Georgetown, there Feb. 6 Davidson, there Feb. 7 Florida, here Feb. 8 Duke, here Feb. 13 Clemson, here Feb. 22 Emory, here Feb. 23 The Citadel, here JUST CHECKIN' .. . The Carolina boxing season will open January 28 in the field house when Fort Bragg invades with a team of urn known ability. Last year's Gamecocks lost only one match, that to LSUJ. They'll have a chance for revenge on March 7 . .. Tomorrow's basketball clash with VPI will mark the first time this season that the Gamecocks have even come close to being even in the height department. We promised you the intramural all-star football teams this week but the referees declined the job of sticking their necks out by selecting a squad that would probably cause controversy. Morrison hit for 22 points against Clemson to up his season's total to 249 points or an average of 20.8 per game. To morrow night's game will give him an opportunity to regain the conference scoring lead. He ranked second to Duke's Dick Groat at the beginning of the week and will go into the Virginia Tech game with a 22.8 average in conference play. Center Johnny Peterson dumped in 16 points against Clemson to run his average to a respectable 12.8, while all-state guard Don Cox has averaged 9.1.
