Basketball Of Season Continue Playing By Meeting Penns To Enter Tournament At Charlotte On 28, 29 By MURRAY SEAMAN The basketball Gamecocks run into their first stiff test of the infant season tomorrow night in the Field House when they meet the Yellow .Jackets from Georgia Tech. Coach Frank .Johilson's has keteers go into this game sporting an 80-point -average from their whitewashings of Citadel and New berry. However Tech is expected to be a much more high-powered ball team than either the Bulldogs or the Indians. Although they were thoroughly trounced by the Parris Island Ma rines, 90 to 58, in their initial out ing last week, Coach John Hyder's team will be decidedly stronger than the score indicates. Hyder has three of last year's regulars plus several good newcomers to the varsity. Guard Teeter Umstead, forward Pete Silas, and center Bill Cline accounted for 45 points against the Marines. All three are from last year's team. Silas was a pre-season all Southeastern conference choice. The rest of the starting five will include Peden Templeton at for ward and Eric Crake at guard. Mickey Best, who has been out of the Gamecock lineup because of an ailing ankle will make his first appearance of the season. He prob ably will start, although - Randy Coleman and Frank Wright have been pushing him for the position. Don Cox, Dwane Morrison and John Peterson are sure starters. As Morrison's running mate, Coach Frank Johnson must choose be tween Tom Hofferth and Jack Wise. Hofferth starred in the Cita del game and Wise did likewise in the Newberry runaway. Going into this game, the home forces boast an amazing 44.1 field goal percentage. Captain Cox is the leader, having dropped eight of his fifteen attempts for a 53.3 average. Next in line is Morrison with 46.8. Morrison is also high scorer having thrown in 28 against Citadel and 22 against Newberry. Tomorrow's fray will be the last one before the Christmas holidays. The next home game will be New Year's eve wvhen the University of Pennsylvania will be here. The Quakers boast one of the powers of the nation this season. In a pre-season poll, a national maga zine rated them 22nd. Penn will feature one of the out standing players in the country in junior pivot man Ernie Beck. Beck, although only fi'4", was the leading rebounder of the country in 1951 with an average of 20 per game.
