Seaman's ( By MURRAY SEAMAN The football season is fast draw ing to a close but the business (thank goodness we don't have to depend on it for a living) of pick ing winners goes on. Last week the old sock (I threw the crystal ball away because of inefficiency) showed a slight improvement, com ing up with 14 right and six on the debit side of the ledger. Some diehard will probably remember the week before when we sank to a seasonal low of ten each. I've been stalling long enough so here are tomorrow's choices: Georgia Tech over Alabama Tech to show why it earned a bowl bid. Georgia over Auburn-Last week the Bulldogs squeezed through. Coach Butts should have some more fire in them tomorrow. Baylor over Wake Forest-I've been going against the Deacs for two weeks and they have been win ning. This can't continue. Besides a Southwestern team is hard to beat any time even without Larry Isbell. Tennessee over Mississippi - Lauricella and his playmates to give another exhibition of their crushing power. Maryland over N. C. State-Mr. Webster will not be enough against the power of the conference. Too much of everything to compete against. Kentucky over George Washing ton-Bino Barreira or anyone else can't stop Parilli and Co. now. They get better every Saturday. Clemson over Furman-The Ti gers in a walkaway. Vanderbilt over Tulane-Too much Bill Wade for the Green Wave to overcome. Penn over Army-Here the Quakers have their chance to get revenge for the shellackings they suffered at the hands of Blanchard and Davis led Cadet teams. Princeton over Yale-Even with Herman Hickman in the Yale line, Kazmaier and his associates would be too much. Princeton has been rated on a par with Tennessee. Pitt over West Virginia-Pick ing this on the theory that the Panthers have to win a game some time. We hate to see a team go through a season without a win for their efforts. Michigan State over Indiana The Spartans to show once again that they deserve to be number one in the nation. Ohio State over Illinois-An other upset in the making (we hope). Wisconsin over Iowa-The Bad gers are one of the top ten teams in the nation. Shouldn't have too much trouble. Notre Dame over North Caro lina-Leahy to have his lads out for blood. After all he likes his job. Michigan over Northwestern The Wolverines are smarting over a loss to an Ivy league team. Texas over TCU-Texas has too much power. But you never can tell in this conference. Stanford over Oregon S.-Stan ford to continue unbeaten and go into the Rose Bowl. ... Rochester's top five men came up with a score of 898, which dlidn't beat local's 914. However, A. P. 1. shot a total of 928 to defo'nt them. Ohio State and Texas have not been heard from yet. Gurney Is the SIBT champ in his weight 'class and was a finalist in the NCAA meet held last year at Michigan State. Score Guessing Contest Continues For Final Games The Chesterfield score-guessing contest will continue for the re mainder of the football season, ac cording to Chesterfield representa tives Bill Gibbes and Jim Kennedy. This week's contest will accept guesses on the score of the USC Virginia game. Each entry must be made on the back of a Chesterfield wrapper and placed in the entry box in the canteen. The entries will be drawn on Monday following the game by an official committee. The first entry drawn with the exact score will win a carton of Chesterfields; the second, three packs and the third, two packs. If no one guesses the exact score the nearest guesses will count as win ners. A student may submit as many entries as he wisbes. The same system will be followed for the Wake Forest game next week. Birds Face (Continued from Page 5) Papit. Bobby Pate and Bill King split up Papit's left half spot. Rufus Barkley, a South Carolina boy from Charleston, handles the passing for the Virginians. Bark ley passed for 16 touchdowns last season and gained 911 yards on 59 completions. Barkley is the main spark in the Cavalier attack. Barkley lacks the ends of last year's team, however, and his pass ing has been slowved somewhat, so far. The leading back for the Cav aliers is Gerry Furst, hard running fullback, who tops the Virginia team in rushing. The right half slot is filled by Jim Ashwell. Virginia has lost only one game this year, that to Washington and Lee in their third game. They have stormed over Duke and North Carolina&, two teams that beat the Gamiecocks decisively. They also heat The Citadel, 39-0. Rex Enright's Glamecocks wvill probably have to rely on the long passes of Balka to loosen up the Virginia defense and give halfback Steve Wadiak a chance to move on the groundl. Hlootie .Johnson and Bobby Drawdy will complete the b)ackfield set-u p for Carolina. Balka's passes will be directed at a number of receivers including Wadiak. WV. A. Skelton and Walt Shea were outstanding at grabbing Balka's passes against WVest Vir ginia. Bob Kahle and Fred Duckett also figure in the p)assinlg plans. The. MI Volleyball Football S By MIKE LOVEJOY Playoffs started in both the Fraternity and Independent Leagues this past Monday. Phi Sigma Kappa won out over Pi Kappa Phi in two very, very tight games and the Sigma Epsilon Club defeated Ten. 24%. Tuesday found the Sigma Chi coming out on the short end of three games with Sigma Nu. The former took the first game 15-13 and then Sigma Nu came back strong to take the next two games, 15-13 and 15-4, and the NROTC trounced Ten. 29 in very handy fashion, 17-15 and 15-10. On Wednesday the NROTC beat Sigma Epsilon Club in two games, 15-11 and 15-4; Pi Kappa Phi eliminated the Sigma Chi repre sentatives by scores of 15-1f and 15-4; and the last game of the day Sigma Nu stop Phi Sigma Kappa in very short order, 15-4 and 15-9. Yesterday saw Ten. 29 and Ten. 24% play with the loser gone from the playoff ranks and Pi Kappa Phi meeting Phi Sigma Kappa, for the second time, with one of them also leaving the tourney.
