RALPH GREGORY, Spoe gder Mike Lovejoy Irn Lkkor Bill Liggett Mrry Seauaa RALPH GREGORY: Hi, Sport! SPIRIT Spirit is one word that can't be accurately defined. Webster gives its meaning as "a frame of mind." But spirit means much more on a football field. It means the desire of a team to give everything to winning. Everything, that is, that practices fair play. There have been several editorials appearing in this paper for the past few weeks arguing the value of cheering from the stands. We're not getting into this scrap but the spirit on the field is another matter to us. When the Gamecocks are on the field you can tell almost any time whether or not the next play will really go. Against Furman last week they played without any hustle, dragging out of the huddle, loafing on blocking assignments and gen erally not trying. Then came the last quarter and a different story. For no apparent reason the Birds came snapping out of the huddle, yelling as they lined up to the ball and the result was a huge gain. In less than two minutes after they got the ball on a fumble they had scored. The surge continued and seconds later they got the ball again. Again they snapped into forma tion and in three plays drove to another touchdown. As a result of a sudden change of spirit on the Carolina eleven a Furman team that had been very much in the ball game, threatening at one point to win, was soundly beaten. WHY THE CHANGE? Why the difference? Maybe some player could tell you but no one sitting in the stands would be able to do so. Perhaps it was the Furman fumble that pepped the team up. Perhaps a chance remark from a Furman player irritated the Bird team and caused them to try that much harder. It could possibly have been that the cheering from the stands ilt the spark. At any rate, the fourth quarter Gamecocks were a lot better than the same boys had been during the first three periods. The same story held true in The Citadel fray. For the first iv minutes the Gamecocks snapped with the spirit of a team that knew they could beat anybody and wanted to prove it. They had been severely panned for the Duke mon strosity and had to take the Cadets. They knew it and proved that they could. But after running up a 14 point lead they quit and very sluggishly held the Bulldogs for the rest of the game. Our contention is that the Gamecocks have, potentially, the best, or at least equal to the best, team in the Southern Conference. They lack the spirit to win. They can take a team that is not in the same class but when a good team is playing all-out football they will be beaten. It's not the yelling from the sidelines but the will of the players that makes them into a great ball club. The baseball Yankees are the best example. Year after year, with a good team but not always the best, they beat the ears off anybody in sight and end up with the World's Championship. To put on a Yankee uniform means the difference between a good ballplayer and a great one. Nothing but spirit and will to win. CADILLAC, 1951 MODEL Steve Wadiak put on another great display last Saturday afternoon to prove that he is just as effective as ever in hip teasing the opposing defense. In 23 carries he rolled for 147 yards to bring his college mileage to 1.3. In all, he has carried 421 times and has gained 2,447 yards. He has moved the ball goalward 451 yards this year. Naturally every defense has been set to derail the Cadillac but so far it hasn't been entirely effective. Wadiak needs to average 122 yards per game to beat his conference leading total of last year, 998 yards. Just Checkin' . .. Statistics for the first three games show that the Birds are sharply ahead of their 1950 pace. In almost every of fensive department the Gamecocks are ahead of their op ponents. They lead in first downs, rushing and total yardage. The passing is only slightly below that of the opposition .. . Coverage of punts is undoubtedly the strongest feature of the defense. On 14 punts opposing runners have returned the ball only 39 yards or less than three yards per return. On 17 kicks by the opposition ,the Gamecocks have returned 142 yards . .. The passing offense is very supperior to that of 1950. Last year Carolina passers launched 101 aerials and completed only 36 for 396 yards. For the first three games this year there have been 49 passes thrown and 21 completed for air yardage of 245. This pace is averaging 81 yards per game passing compared to 44 last year . .. When the Birds meet North Carolina tomorrow at Chapel Hill it will be Homecoming for the Tar Heels and for eight North Carolina natives on the USC squad. They are backs Gene Wilson, Zack Taylor, Emmett Dietz, Rupert Collins; center Jess Berry; and tackles Paul Stephens, Frank Auten, and Don Harmon ...Chuck Prezioso, star fullback of 1949, seems to haive taken over the extra point kicking. He booted three straight against Furan . .. UNC has 399 yards rushing for their first three games which falls more than 200 yards short of the Bird total for the same period. Of course the Tar Heels have met some pretty stiff lines, Texas, Georgia, and NC State .. . Bob King, 225 pound guard who was injured the day before fall practice will enroll for the spring semster . .. The Clem son game continues to grow in national notice. The fog cleared enough to allow me to pick 15 winners of last week end's games. For two week's work we now spdrt a 72% or 29 out of 40 games predicted. As usual it was Kentucky who led the parade Df upsets. Losing is getting to be a habit with Paul Bryant's Wild :ats who on paper stack up as one >f the powers in the Southeastern conference. The first game is in Columbia, on De cemnber 5. ,Thirty-five prospects showed up with ten having already been cut. This year's team will be built around a nucleus of returning lettermen. The four- most out standing of the group are: Johnny Peterson, who made All-State and played forward last season but will probably be moved to center this season; Dwane Morrison, who also made All-State and is expected to return to his old forward position; Don Cox, who made AU-State and will return to his usual outstanding ball handling, set shots, and ag gressiveness at guard; and Mickey Best, who made second team All State and is small (as is Cox) but is fast, a good set shoot artist and Students!
