Birds Intramura Announce, By MIKE LOVEJOY The Intramural Sports program for the year, 1961-62, will com mence as soon as the representa tives of teams, which will partici pate in the leagues, meet with the Intramural Sports Director and his staff. The year will begin with volleyball competition ar,d will be followed by a touch football, bas ketball, and softball program There will also be a track and swimming meet, if enough are in terested The Director of Intramural Sports, Joe Grugan, announced that a number of minor sports will be included if there is enough in terest among students. Among these are: boxing, tennis, golf, and handball. The leagues are set up along the following lines, for the benefit of all newcomers: There are four leagues, two fraternity leagues (composed of teams representing campus fraternities) and two inde pendent leagues (composed of teams representing d i ff e r e n t organizations, i.e., NROTC, Mc Bryde, etc.). A regular schedule is played through a certain period. After this the winners, teams with the best records, in both leagues (fraternity vs. fraternity) meet each other in a playoff to determine a fraternity league and independent league champion. (If time permits the two get together to pick a campu-s champ.) Trphies w% ill be awarded to the winne ot' each sport in each league, as has been done in the uast. The book, which contains photographs of the football team, was edited by Don Barton, athletic publicity di rector. Among other things the contents include the 1951 football schedule, a USC football directory, articles about Coach Enright and Steve Wadiak and a complete varsity roster. Also included in the booklet is a section called "Meet the Game cocks," five pages, introducing each player on the squad. Books may be obtained from the Alumni office which is located in Lieber college on the second floor. Wadiak Named Capt. Of Gamecocks For '51 Carolina's All-American candi date, Steve Wadiak, was elected captain of the 1951 Gamecocks by this year's team at a recent meet ing. This is the first time the captain has been elected before the grid campaign as in the past he was chosen at the end of the season. The "Cadillac" (who drives a Pontiac) was the team's leading round gainer as well as the lead- 1 ing "yardage getter" in the con- t ference. A crowd of more than 25,000 is expected for the meeting. The game is expected to attract more than passing i n t e r e s t throughout the South for there will be several potential All-Americans in the encounter. USC's Steve Wadiak and Larry Smith are listed as sure all-conference men. For the Dukes end Blaine Earon is the star to watch. The Gamecocks, who bowed to Duke last year, 14-0, are putting their hopes in offensive power. They have one of the better run ring backfields in the nation and are a good bet to come up with an effective passing attack. Likely to start in the backfield are Wadiak and Hootie Johnson at the halves, Bobby Drawdy at full, and either Dick Balka or Johnny Gramling at the quarterback slot. The Blue Devils are known to have a solid defense and from in dications of early scrimmages have a potent offense. They rolled up a 75-0 score over Camp Lejeune, a Marine team.
