Silver Star Is
Awarded By Navy
To USC Graduate
Lt. Richard O. Young, U. S. N.,
a university graduate, was awarded
the Silver Star medal "for gallan
try and intrepidity in action" by
Captain J. E. Mays, U. S. N., at
the Naval hospital in Charleston.
Lt. Young is recuperating there
from wounds received when his
ship sank after striking a mine in
the harbor of Wonsan, North
Korea, last fall. -
Lt. Young was awarded the
Bronze Star during World War II

High Schoolers Get
Two Scholarships
From Music Dept.
Hugh Williamson, director of the
music department, announces the
winners of two music scholarships
for the fall term 1951-52.
Miss Irene Manos, Columbia,
violinist and pupil of Mr. Walther
Krueger, was awarded a scholar
ship offered by Delta Omicron na
tional honorary professional music
fraternity (Delta Mu chapter)
which covers one year's tuition in
violin.
Mr. William Foote Marshall, Jr.,
bass-baritone of Darlington, was
awarded one year's scholarship in
voice. This scholarship was offered
by Delta Sigma chapter of Phi Mu
Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity of
the university.
Both students will be entering
the university as freshmen in the
fall term of 1951.52.

Senator 0. T. Wallace of Charles
ton recently introduced a bill in
the State Senate appropriating
$250,000 from the general fund of
the state for the purpose of enlarg
ing, completing, improving, and re
pairing the present Carolina sta
dium, including the acquiring of
any property necessary for carry
ing out the other purposes.
Senator Edgar A. Brown of
Barnwell raised objection to Sena
tor Wallace's request, commenting
that the senate should wait and
spending by the state as a whole.
Senator Wallace told the senate,
"All the celebrities have plenty of
tickets. All I want to do is have
enough room so the little- people
can get 5gme tickets.
"Besides, I'm tired of having
people call me fro'mn' alL or the1
state all during footba' ask
ing me to get them tickets. They
ought to be able to get them at the
university or the game.

Piano Contest Won
By Carolyn Powell
Announcement has been made
that Miss Carolyn Powell, pianist,
of Columbia, was declared winner
of the Piano Division of the Stu
dent Musicians' Contest of the
South Carolina Federation of Mu
sic Clubs held at Furman univer
sity at Greenville on Saturday,
March 31. As winner, Miss Powell
appeared in Charlotte on April 14
to compete in the district contest.
Miss Powell is a junior piano
major studying with Hugh Wil
liamson, director of music. Last
spring she was awarded one of the
scholarships offered by the After
noon Music Club of Columbia. She
has recently been elected president
of Delta Mu chapter of Delta Omi
cron, national honorary profes
sional music fraternity of the uni
versity.

Quota For Platooi
The Commandant of the Marine
Corps has increased the quota of
students who may be taken into the
Marine platoon leaders class from
the university, Major R. G. Mc
Master, associate professor of
naval science, has announced.
Priority in the class has been
given to upperclassmen, but this
increase will allow freshmen to en
ter the program.
