On this occasion I asked him if I could come down to take some pictures and write a story on my visit. He assented, and so a few days later I made the trip to Kingstree. Mr. Baruch is a large man, both in statue and in poise. He stands six feet two inches high and weighs about 195. He always wears a hearing aid as a result of a fist fight in his youth. In spite of the hearing aid he still is hard of hear ing and so I had to speak very loud. He told me that he was glad to see that the people of South Carolina were not as conscious of racial prejudice as the Northern press would have the country be lieve. As an example of that he remarked on the large number of both white and colored attending the inauguration of Mr. Byrnes. He has recently taken up the study of Greek and Latin, a fact that particularly impressed me in view of the fact that he is almost 81 years of age. For ex ample, the day before I came down, he went hunting and bagged 17 birds with only 15 shots, which is a record, he says, for him. I have never met a man that seemed so infinitely confident of himself as is Mr. Baruch. This is due, I believe, to his enormous rec ord of predictions that proved true. I remember listening to a radio program on which a veteran of the second world war was being inter viewed, and on this program the veteran told of asking Mr. Baruch just what field of work he should get into. Mr. Baruch answered that the construction business would be a very profitable field because of the tremendous housing shortage. The veteran followed his advice, and three years later was the head of a corporation worth a million dollars. This was only one inci dent, for Baruch has been advisor to several presidents and has made many predictions that have been basis for action concerning the economy of the nation. n the world but I i.
