Birds Champs Exhibit Tl As Intramural Fo< By RALPB GREGORT Intramural footbah swung into action last week with all teams playing at least one game. From the first few games it seems that last year's champions will again be hard to handle. Tenement 29 and Kappa Alpha were co-cham. pions in 1949-50 and neither has been beaten so far this year. Three games were played on No vember 28 with Kappa Alpha downing Phi Sigma Kappa 18-0; Lambda Chi edging Pi Kappa Phi 2-0; and Tenement 29 gaining a forfeit win over Tenements 19 and 20. On the following day Sigma Nu rolled over SAE in Fraternity League, 25-0. AIEE and Tenement 9 both gained victories with AIEE downing NROTC 7-0 and Tene ment 9 winning by forfeit from Maxcy 3rd. Tenement 24% opened its season on November 30 by tripping ASCE 14-0 while Sigma Chi rolled up the same score over ATO. A third game was declared a double for feit when both Marcy 2nd and Tenement 21 failed to show up. On December 1 Maxey 3rd squared its record at the expense of Tenements 2 and 8 by a score of 7-2. Phi Kappa Sigma over came a six-point deficit in the last half to defeat Pi Kappa Phi 8-6. Jack Thomas ran over an inter cepted pass to tie the game and seconds later Footsey Field nailed an opponent in the end zone for the game-winning safety. In Fra ternity League I Kappa Sigma had little trouble as they topped Pi Kappa Alpha 19-0. Bill Norman, Bill Eargle and Joe Clark sparked a last quarter drive that brought ASME from be hind to top Preston 3rd West in a thrilling game 7-6 on December 4. On the same date Lambda Chi slipped by SAE 14-0 and Tene ments 19 and 20 gained a forfeit win over Maxey 2nd. NROTC dropped its second game of the young season on December 5 to Tenement 24% by a score of 14-2. Tenement 21 forfeited to Tenement 9 and Kappa Alpha trip ped Sigma Chi 12-6. Phi Kappa Sigma lost a close game in Fraternity League 2 to Pi Kappa Phi. A safety gained the win for the Pi Kaps 8-6. Maxcy 2nd forfeited to Tenement 29. Sports quiz Werner Strauss, ' Tenement 28, has two tickets to Columbia's house of hits, the Carolina Theatre, as a result of his promptness in re turning an entry marked "Wah Wah Wallace Jones" to last week's sportsquiz. Billy Kincaid, Lamar Smith, Fred Wilson, Carl Langley, and Howard Casada were right too, but tardy. The only Gamecock opponent who is expected to be on the All American lists at the end of the season, this six foot, seven-inch man-about-the-courts shot a record (for the state in which he com petes) of five hundred and thirty four points last year. Because of this, in addition to an unbelievable total of sixty-three points in one game, he was the recipient of the 1949-50 Haggerty trophy for gen eral excellence. His best shot, of many good ones, is a "jump" which virtually can not be blocked. Considered a "lightweight" at 210, he has least success with his pivot, which is usually a little weak. In seven games last year he managed 25 points. Although he was once held to eight points, he makes a habit of outscoring his opponents and only three ieu had what might be called a "good night" against him. He is a major in physical edu cation and history, and a popular lad at school. Name the lad quickly, write the name of his school below his name, then your name and address and send both to Gamecock Sports, Box 79, Campus. Newberry sports losses to Pelzer Mills, Catawba, and Lenoir-Rhyne, but they have a star in co captain Alvin Fister, the only returnee from last year's first team, and the rest of the team is rounding into shape rapidly. The only other starter with varsity ex perience prior to this season is ther other co-captain Charlie Stoude mire, who plays a forward. The five men play under a height handicap, for center Neil Chrisley, at six-two, is the tallest man on the team.
