TANKERSLEY Next Year, and Next The Coach expressed it better than we can, the event of Thursday a week ago. When reporters asked his views of the tilt, Carolina's Rex Enright said, "On the basis of our performance, we could easily have won. Some unfor tunate penalties kept us from doing that but those boys played their hearts out and we are holding our heads high. "We played a good, hard game just like we've done all year. I'm still proud of my team." And we're proud of them, too, Coach. Mighty proud. One of the most notable aspects of the game was the big zero racked up by the Birds and placed beside the statistical ele ment called fumbles, so you deserve much applause yourself, Mr. Enright, for that and other reasons. Wadiak was .. . but we won't go into that. The name is enough-Steve Wadiak. Coach Frank Howard of Clemson said a few things after the game which also make us somewhat proud, not only of the Gamecocks but of Howard himself in his expression of first-class sportsmanship. - Carolina-Clemson relationships, better than in many years, will be improved even more be cause of Howard's summation of the meet. When asked at what time the turning point occurred, Howard said that there was no turning point at all. "They outplayed us throughout the game." He said in reply to the wet field question that both teams played on the same field, and added that nothing was par ticularly wrong with Clemson except that they lost. "They all gave us trouble," said Howard, meaning the Gamecock players. "They were a darn good team." All of that after Clemson was on the way to top honors, being the only major team in the nation untied, unbeaten and unscored upon and rated by one national group as seventh in the country (before Big Thursday). However, there should be no great worries for either institution. Both can still obtain major post-season bowl bids if each manages to surmount the obstacles which lie hidden in the schedules from here on out. For Carolina and Clemson alike the major menace will probably appear in the form of Wake Forest's Demon )eacons, present Southern Conference leader. For the Gamecocks, a second worry hinges on a November 18 encounter with the North Caro lina Tar Heels at Carolina stadium. The opening loss to Duke may be overlooked should the well-coached Birds knock off these two giants and gain victories over George Washington tonight, as well as over an improved Mar quette squad and The Citadel Bulldogs. That is a tall order but from here it seems like the fighting Gamecocks are just the men to accomplish it. 40-20 Almost as important as the Big Thursday game, and a lot more important as far as future Bird power is concerned, was the Biddie-Cub tilt the night of Big Wednesday. The impressive 40-20 win by the Biddies brought out a galaxy of stars who undoubtedly, barring the draft and such, will provide Carolina fans with excitement and thrills galore in the next three years, possibly making the Gamecock varsity footballers one of the strongest teams in the nation for quite a stretch-a stretch which has already begun. To those who saw the Chicks in action, the men who composed that sturdy line and brilliant backfield spell out plenty of victories in the years around the corner. They love football and they know how to play it. Gator Bowl And speaking of bowl bids, word comes from the Ray McCarthy organization that South Carolina, which aided in inaugurating the Gator Bowl classic on January 1, 1946, will be well represented at the sixth annual Gator Bowl contest next New Year's Day. More orders for tickets to this game have originated in South C'arolina than any other state, with the exceptions of F'lorida and Georgia. During the past week, orders for ducats have been re ceivedl from the following points in the Palmetto state: Charleston, Greenwood, Arcadia, Florence, Marion, Columbia, Sumter, Summerton, Newberry and Walterboro. Maybe the folks around here are set on seeing a South Carolina team in Jacksonville when the new year dawins. Since South Carolina or Clemson might become eligible for the sixth annual Gator Bowl game, no wonder requests from this section keep flowing ini. The Gamecocks and the D)eacons were the first two teams to engage in the classic with the Deacs J*'oving a little tough in taking a 26-14 decision. There were several thouisanid spectators from this state in the stands hr the first game and many of them have returned for every New Year's Day battle since then. In 1949 it was Clemson and Missouri and about 15,000 South Carolinians followed the Tigers to the city by the sea. With gridiron performances of teams all over the country being analyzed by Edgar Jones, chairman of the Gator Bowl selection committee, and 'the organized members, close notice has been taken of the Carolina Gamecocks and Clem son, plus teams like Miami, Rice, Alabama, Duke, Maryland, Tennessee, Washington and Lee, Georgia and Virginia. Dependable Jones is bound to come up with two teams who will, in his own words, "provide the .kind of a game that spectators want to see, a high-scoring, thrilling contest." Birds Go To U Wadiak, On The Gc Steve Wadiak shows his heels to an unidentified Clemson playc off one of his many long gains in last week's "Big Thursday" bat Clemson Tigers. Steve had a field day in the mud as he gained a I average of 13.5 yards per try. He rushed more yardage than the e ground and in the air.
