(USC Photo by Manning Harris) Know Your Professors By JOE STRINGER This is the first of a series of features about Carolina profes sors, in an effort to help the students know more about the professor's life than just his ca reer as a teacher. Born in Abbe ville County, South Carolina, June 18, 1884, was a child destined to be known by many students at U. S. C. as the Dean of raculty, Francis W. Bradley. He first visited the Carolina campus in 1902 when he was hero for the Carolina-Clemson game. Even then he missed the big stunt fight the next night. He was graduated from U. S. C. with a straight A.B. degree in 1907. Before graduation he was employed as a part-time instructor in French. Beginning full-time work in 1907, he made his first trip abroad in 1908 where he stud ied in Paris, and also studied Ger man and French at Marburg Uni versity, Germany, in 1910-1911. In 1913, he married Miss Jane Trenholm. He entered military service in 1917 and was discharged two years later with the rank of major. One of his most important jobs during the military career was in serving on the Permanent International Armistice Commis sion. Returning to the university in 1919, he was an associate profes sor until his promotion to profes sor and head of the depaartment of Teutonic Languages in 1922. Soon after this, all languages were consolidated into one department. He took his Ph.D. degree at the University of Chicago in 1926. Upon the death of President Melton in 1926, Francis Bradley became Dean of Faculty while Dr. Baker was acting president. He was acting Dean again in 1931 upon the death of Dr. Douglas and became Dean of College of Arts and Science with the election of Dr. McKissick. He served in this capacity until 1946 when he was again made Dean of Faculty. He has served on numerous boards and committees, and. en joys deep-sea fishing as his fa vorite sport. He completed his elementary education in Zlonice and later a1 tended Charles university in Prague, where he studied la.w. He speaks five languages well and is able to get along in four more. While at Carolina he will study languages and political science. At the time he received news of his scholarship, Vladimir was working in Italy. Before that he had been active in anti-communist . movements in his homeland. Vladimir asked that his appre elation be expressed to the stu dentp who helped bring him here.
