Dates For 1i Events Are By L. C. TANKERSLEY The opening dates of all intra mural activities to be held during the spring semester were an nounced this week by Joe Grugan, director of intramural sports. Basketball, the present highlight on the intramural agenda, has just gotten under way. Thirty-three teams, 13 from fraternities and 20 representing the independents, have been lined up for the*season which is expected to last about seven weeks. Students with basketball ex perience or knowledge of basket ball officiating are needed to referee. "Those students interested in officiating at some of these games should not delay in contact ing us at the intramural office," Grugan said. Either Grugan or Bill Davis, student assistant, should be contacted by those in terested. After the completion of the bas ketball season, a cavalcade of sports activities will proceed to fill the intramural bill. According to Grugan, a o m e trackster will reap the golden har vest. This year, as usual, a trophy will be offered to the best intra mural miler. Called the "Farr Mile," the trophy is named in memory of the late James Farr, Sr., who established and first pre sented it to victorious intramural tracksters. Now the trophy is pre sented by Farr's son, James, Jr. The trophy was won last year by Freddy Compher, with a 5:13:0 mile. He represented Lambda Chi. In addition to track, due to open the post-basketball season March 22, softball begins March 27. Box ing starts nearly a month later, April 21, followed closely by golf and tennis, both expected to begin by April 24. Intramurals will wind up what officers expect to be the best season yet with swimming, scheduled to begin May 5. A basketball free-throw contest, an annual promotion of the intra mural department, will be held from Feb. 20 through 24, between 3 and 5 p. m., Grugan said. Ten men are to represent each campus fraternity and each man will be alloted 20 shots at the basket. The percentage will be figured from the average of the five best free throwers of each fraternity. The fraternity with the best average will be the winner. Chesterfield Contest Want to win a free carton of Chesterfields?
