Lloyd Huntington, Sports Editor Jimmy Howle Dick Ounap AlTom Price Bill Kaufman Fowl Or Fair by Lloyd Huntington THE LAST QUARTER The policy of college newspaper columnists the world over seems to be to give a summary of their aims in their initial column. This writer following that policy did that four and a half months ago when Fowl or Fair made its inauspicious be ginning in The Gamecock. Now as we give way to better men it seems that the policy could work just as well in reverse. Looking back over the semester we realize that this has probably been the most undistinguished sports column that has appeared in these pages in years and years. We've come through a whole semester and we haven't had a good fight with anybody. We haven't fought with the ath letic department; we haven't attacked the BAM club for their handling of student tickets; we haven't fought with any of the administrative officials whose job it is to handle the various phases of the athletic program here. In fact we have mostly agreed with them. On one occasion we did attempt to burst the bubble of optimism which continually has put all of Carolina's athletic teams on the spot year after year, and we were called treasonous for that. Yet perhaps we came closer to success on that issue than AW we would have if we had spent our energies in futile howl ing in the wilderness for a new deal in athletics. For looking back at the football season it seems to us that the student body found its most sensible attitude since this writer be came a member of the student body. We learned how to lose and even the most hardshelled critic can't deny that we had less agitation than in any year since the war. if thia column had any influence at all in bringing about that chahge then our efforts were not in vain. And we don't mind the telephone calls and "well-turned" phrases used in calling us a so-and-so when the column first ap peared. In Fowl or Fair's inaugural we sounded the first notes of a new era in Carolina athletics. We said that Carolina was on the move and those first signs are still apparent. Not that we believe that the Gamecocks will rise to the heights in a year and become the giant-killers of Southern football. And we certainly do not think that the Bird bas ketballers will take the Southern Conference crown (though that would be a pleasant surprise). But we do believe that by next year the Gamecocks will be able to hold their own with anything in the Conference. 4 They may exceed even that limit. And the Carolina basketballers in another year should be among the best in the Conference. With a little more experience they would be now. They will have that ex perience by next year and they'll also have a couple of men they need up from the frosh team. Carolina's baseball team should come into its own this year after several years of experimentation and misfits. They had a good year last year and Coach Ted Petoskey should have better material in the Spring. Add all of these things together, and its easy to believe (Continued on Page 8) We've Never The Tri-Delta Powder Bowl team, of which the new edition is the P1 Phis but inside observera say that this is the year.
