A somewhat disturbed woman
stood on a corner watching a little
boy smoke one cigarette after
another. Finally, unable to~bear it
any longer, she approached him
and said, "Son, why aren't you in
school?"
' The boy answered disgustedly,
"Hell, lady, I'm only three years
old."
Porter: "Did you miss your
train, sir?"
Irate traveler: "Naw, I didn't
like its looks, so I chased it out of
the station."
Two street urchins were watch
ing a barber singe a customer's
hair. "Gee," said one to the other,
"he's hunting them with a light."
"Oh Doctor," said the young
lady, "will the scar show?"
"That, madam," said the doctor,
"is entirely up to you."

USC Extension
Library Offers
Aid To Students
By RUTH BARKER
e
Information on almost any sub- 0
ject is available at the Extension
Library which is located just In
across the street from the horse
t
shoe, declares Mrs. D. R. Riser,
head librarian. 1
One of the main purposes is to
serve the citizens of the state who
are not attending the university .
and to present them with the same
advantages enjoyed by the resident
students.
Package libraries, which are col
lections of reference material on
a single subject, are sent to all
counties in South Carolina and to
almost all of the states.
Furnished upon request, these
libraries are available for a period
of two weeks at no charge to the 3
individual borrowing them except c
that qf postage. t
The package libraries contain i
articles clipped from periodicals, t
bulletins, pamphlets, leaflets, and <
possibly a book or reprint from a <
reference work not available for i
loan.
Another important service of a
this group is that of sending text
books to the field classes run by I
the University Extension Division <
in various parts of the state. These I
books are returned at the end of t
semester.

The annual Carolina Forensics
tournament, in which 15 teams will
compete, will be held Nov. 18-19
in Drayton Hall, Professor M. G.
Christophersen, director of foren
sics and dramatics, has announced.
The topic of debate is "Resolved:
That the United States should na
tionalize non-agricultural indus
trie.''
The university won the cham

last year. The men's championship
rank was won by Wake Forest.
However, Melton Kligman and Jim
Simmons of Carolina attended the
national debating tournament in
Illinois and returned with top
honors.
Teams expected to compete in the
tournament will include those of
the Universities of Georgia, Flor
ida, and North Carolina; also,
Tennessee Tech, Maryland Wo
men's college, Agnes Scott, Fur
man, Lenoir-Rhyne and Georgia
Tech.
Medals will be awarded to the
winning teams; gold cups will be
given individual men and women

Since we have a radio in our

I However, it took me some time to
get used to commercials. Back
home, every owner of a radio pays
a certain monthly fee to the post
office, and this money is for the
broadcasting stations. They are by
far not as numerous as over here.
In Western Germany there are
less than twenty stations alto
gether, and since the money col
lected from every listener is dis
tributed proportionately to the size
of the station, the word "sponsor"
is unknown. But till I get back,
I'll rush to my favorite store, I'll
spend all my money by saving up

realize that my back has beeu ach
