Biddies i Line Stronger, Duckett Ready For Frosh Tilt By TOM PRICE Coach Frank Johnson ran his freshman gridders through a short, brisk limbering up drill yesterday afternoon to taper off final prep aration for the Biddies meeting with the Tiger Cubs of Clemson in the Big Thursday preview at Caro lina Stadium tonight at 8 p. m. The Baby Birds are in top shape physically for the contest and have shown much improvement over their earlier performances in re cent practice sessions. Duckett Returns The return of end Fred Duckett from the injured list is a great boost to the squad's power on both offense and defense. The lanky flankman from Union was a key man in the Biddies operations in their season opener against the I Baby Hurricane from Miami until i he was forced to the sidelines with a wrenched knee. At first it was feared that Duckett's Injury would sideline him for the re mainder of the season, but he re sponded rapidly to treatment and recuperated much quicker than ex pected. In recent drills, the emphasis has been on offense and ball handling, a phase that was ragged in the Chicks initial encounter of the season. The ball handling has been vastly improved, and the startling number of fumbles that the Biddies were guilty of in the Miami fray is expected to be great ly reduced. The running of half back Hootie Johnson has been especially heartening, and with some improved blocking he and several of the other fast Biddy backs are expected to show up well. Line Potent The highly regarded Biddie line,l which showed up well on defense against Miami, is expected to give another commendable perform ance. The starting line will prob ably read: Ends Duckett and Frank Tobin, tackles Hugh Merck and Don Earley, guards Fred Car ter and Guy Nichols, and center Chick Angioli. The Tiger Cubs, headed by half back star Forrest Calvert from General William Moultrie High School at Mount Pleasant, are re puted to have a strong, fast team. In addition to Calvert, they have a number of former state high school stars. In their previous outings 1 this fall, the Cubs lost to the Fort Jackson Red Raiders 20-6, and de feated the Presbyterian College I freshmen 13-8.t Probable Starting Lineups: Clemson Carolina RE-Vite ..Tobin I RT-Byrd Earley RG-Hudson Nichols C-Small ...Angioli< LG-Baldwin ...Carter LT-Philhower Merck 1 LE-Moore .Duckett t QB-Pate .Hinkle or Brown s LH-McLellan or . Few Men R< As Birds Pr The rash of injuries that plagued :he Carolina football team last ;eason and during the early weeks 'his year seems to be on the de :line, and the entire squad, with 'he exception of tackle Vic Hen rickson and possibly quarterback Bo Hagan, is expected to be in uni rorm and ready to go when the Gamecocks line up against the Clemson Tigers tomorrow after r.oon at Carolina stadium in an nual Big Thursday State Fair 3truggle bctween the two schools. Men who have been hit by the injury and sickness blitz so far this year include: Ends Cecil Wool bright, Red Wilson, Harry Bryson, and Dick Fagan; tackles Henrick son, Harry Stewart, and Paul Stephens; guards Ben Skinner, Roy Skinner, O'Neiii Gause, and Hugh Rogers; centers Len Ekim :ff and Frank Boulware; and backs Bo Hagan, Tommy Woodlee, Bishop Strickland, Bayard Pickett, E,d Paskey, and John Boyle. The injury rate in the Baylor ind Furman games was high, but he Birds emerged from the North Carolina struggle with no addi ions to the bandage and splint 'anks. The extent of the injuries -esulting from the Tar Heel strug ele was confined to a few minor >ruises and bumps. Coach Enright received a scare arly last week when Big John 3oyle, giant pass throwing quar erback from Brooklyn, N. Y., suf 'red a kidney bruise and leg in ury in the first scrimmage fol owing the NC game. The injury, Lowever, proved to be minor, and he "Flatbush Flinger" will be in here throwing them for the Game ocks tomorrow.
