"It is probably the greatest Ptep made in recent years in teaching English 11 and 12," Professor Wag ener of the English department said today. "It provides a sub stantial literary base for the stu dents and enables them to have a greater understanding of literary works in advanced E n g I i s h courses," he explained. "We are now seeing the results of the parallel system initiated last year, and because of those results we plan to make out a parallel list, though not so narrow, for English 21 and 22", Wagener said. The parallel list for English II includes "The Odessey", "David Copperfield", "Gayley's Classical Myths", and either "Pilgrims' Progress", or certain selections from the Old Testament. The English 12 parallel list is composed of "The Illiad", "Ham let", "The Scarlet Letter", and "Tess of Dourderville". Display indicates Ratings Of Rural Library Facilities By MARTHA MATTHEWS A current display in the lobby of McKissick library shows that South Carolina ranks lower than any southeastern state in rural li brary service and rural and urban library material. The display is a reprint from the March, 1949 issue of the Southern Agriculturist. Among the southeastern states, South Cnrlinn is gr-qnted t.h, smallest amount of state aid for library work, and the total for 1949 was approximately $75,000. North Carolina appropriations amounted to $550,000 in 1949, and it ranks highest in library donations for the southeastern states. The report shows that ten South Carolina counties have no rural library service whatsoever. Of the 36 counties that do have library fa -ilities, there is a distribution ca pacity of one half book per person. It was demonstrated that more money, books, trained personnel, state aid, and federal aid are badly needed in South Carolina. -Aluini Council Studies Progress Of Past Year The new alumni counell of the university held its first meeting Thursday in the executive offices in Lieber college, with the new president, J. Willis Cantey of Co lumbia, presiding. The council reviewved the work of the past year, studied the associ ation's program, policies, and mem bership trends, andl President Cani tey appointed committees on fi nance, legislation, and membership. Means of furthering the associa tion's program were studied. The council re-elected Ralph Lewis, executive secretary of the association, and (devoted the re mainder of the session to routine matters. Smith, university , alumnus, was recently elected - president of the Institute of Traffic - Engineers at their 20th annual - meeting in Washington, D. C. This association is composed of nearly - 400 highway and traffic engineers from all parts of the U. S. Mr. Smith will serve as president - of the 1. T. E. for the coming year. e At present, he is associate director of the Yale Bureau of Highway Traffic at New Haven, Connecti cut. A native of Columbia, Mr. Smith graduated from the University in - 1932, with a B.S. degree in electri - cal enginecraing. The following year _ he received his M.S. degree in elec trical engineering here. For six years he wa3 connected with the S. C. State Highway De partment.
