Racquet T In State Tc - By LLOYD H The Bird tennis team close by invading Clinton for the ar ends tomorrow. The Birds still smarting 60rc took from Presbyterian's Blu< seeking to avenge themselves. But standing smack in their way of redeeming themselves by bringing home state honors in the tournament will be this same Blue Hose team which has not lost a state match in a number of years and which is perennially one of the stronger teams in the South. Yet the Birds, somewhat hearten ed by their fine showing against the Blue Stockings last week, have a number of factors in their fator. Presbyterian is again favored to run away with the tournament but the Gamecocks are expected to of fer stiff competition. Should the Birds be up for this one they could possibly upset the favored Blue Hose who have won the tourna ment for several tonsecutive yeairs. Last week the Ilirds were nar rowly edged by the Hose 5-4 in a match that was not decided until the last doubles event in which Presbyterian's superlative team of Bobby Spurrier and Kay Kaiser licked Ben Turner and Freddie At kinson. Spurrier, defending state cham pion, will again be seeded number one, with Ben Turner probably being given the number two spot. Petoskey represents the southern division, North Carolina and South Carolina teams, on a three-mat, conference baseball committee. last year he submitted the orig inal suggestion for the league split. The southern division would in- a clude Carolina, Furman, Cemson, and The Citadel along with fivi North Carolina teams. This would make Petoskey's plans for a South t Carolina Big Four official. t The Big Four winner of this state would play the winner of a North Carolina's Big Five for the southern division championship. The winner of this series would then play the northern division p representative for the league title. g Formerly there has been no of- 3 ficial conference champion and s claims have been purely mythical, a based on won-lost records. V Questionnaires have been sent to all loop teams to find the overall a sentiment on the idea. Carolina, r Furman, and The Citadel have al- t ready voiced their approval. Another advantage of the new-v system would be the selection of t the top team in each division to t represent the Southern conference v in the NCAA playoffs, which be- a (2), Stephens, McLauren (2), Burris (2), Baleoy; 2B1--Burris, Bailey, Parone, Couch; SB-Pinkerton (2), Parone Sykes; DP-McLauren, Bailey to Moore; fykes to Rogers; LOB-Citadel 8, South Carolina 9; BOB-lAcEntee (2), Edwards (4), Haiti a wanger (4).
