Boxing Preview Fails To Please Capacity Crowd South Carolina's boxing team put on an unimpressive intra squad exhibition before a ca pacity crowd in the field house Wednesday night. The show started off at a fast pace, but as the bouts progressed the action slowed down consider ably. The first and last bouts were the best of the evening. Joe Stringer met Pete Campassi, con ference champ, in the opener and gave Campassi a lot of trouble. Bill Rutledge had Ed Hunt in trouble in the last bout of the eve ning. Rutledge was sharper than ever as he hit Hunt with uncanny ease throughout the fight. The much-publicized ineligibles from last year, Grady Decell and Sylvester Lewis had a rough eve ning of it. Lewis ran up against Red Douglas, who showed consid erable improventent over last year's performance. Douglas look ed to be a serious threat to Lewis' spot. on the team. Decell was g'ven a lesson in dancing and feinting from rookie George Hitopoulos, whose unortho dox left-handed style had Decell fooled. Harry Temple, another pre-fight headline attraction, failed to im press the crowd. He fought Jim Briggman, who inanaged to keep a long left hand in Temple's face throughout the two three-minute rounds. All of the newcomers showed flashes of brilliance, but they were off in their timing and footwork. The fights gave Coach Jess Al derman a good chance to see just how much, or how little, progress his boxers have made since pra tice started over a month ago. The bouts were sponsored by the Block C club. All proceeds went to the club to defer operational expenses throughout the year. George Wright introduced the box VAN HEUSEN SHIRTS Wright-Johnston, INC. We're hungry for a winner and if we don't get it soon we'll go nuts. Just one championship, Santa, is that asking too much ' We spend a lot of money on players, but we don't seem to get the right ones. Sure, they play good, but not up to par with op ponents. If you could send us a couple of guards like Neil Allen and Max Walker and a center such as Bryant Meeks we'd be satisfied. In fact, we'd be tickled to death. We're not crying for athletes. Santa, we just want better players for our money. And while you're looking for players you might in vest something to stop trick knees from jumping out of place or ankles from becoming twisted. It. seems we at Carolina were hardest hit by these maladies this year. Is there any way that you can stop our players from fumbling and being penalized, Santa? If so, we'd sure like to have the pre scription. How about helping us take the Southern Conference title one time? If you could dig deep down in- your stocking and come up with a Preston Westmoreland, Harry Loftdahi, or the like, we'd ieally have a Merry Christmas. While we're asking, Mr. Claus, how about helping out a fine coach at Carolina? He's new around here. He came here from Ole Miss. Will you wrap up a Southern Boxing championship, keep it a secret until the first few weeks in April, and then spring it on Coach Jess Alderman? This would surely build up our morale, Santa. Then we w->uldn't be completely neglected. We'd have one winning team, at least. And when the warm spring months come around, is it asking too much to get a few two-armed pitchers for our baseball coach. Any man who can throw the ball to and over the plate will fit the bill, Santa. In fact, we might set tle on a few one-armed or one legged specimens-if they can pitch. If you'll (10 all this, it would be a god-send to this victory-starved campus. We would gain some of the prestige which was lost this past year. Cheek this list a couple more times, St. Nick, and see what you can do for us. Honest, wve're desperate.
