PHOrca NErste and3 Co2 Sweeny Tour Visits Spots On Continent On June 24, a party of eighteen from the university embarked on the S. S. Queer Mary. Mrs. Grace Sweeny, French professor at the universi%y, was tour director dur ing the six-week-long trip. Mrs. Sweeny's touring party in cluded: Minnie Holmes, Julie Simpson, Betty Murphy, Mary Side, Mary Kohn, Dorothy S,mith, Amalie Stone, Susan MeElveen, Jodie Marshall, Mary 'Jumper, Katherine Smart, Caro Bristow, Jeanne Crawford, Thomas Hair, Johnny Edens, and Mrs. Joseph Hawkins. The tour was climaxed by events that sound too fantastic for a group of southern students to ex perience. When they arrived back in New York on AuguAt 4, hun gering for fried chicken, each had a special memory from the six na tions that they visited. Here are a few of the memor able events and places: the Red demonstration in Venice and at tempted assassination of Togliotti, the Independence Day party in the American Embassy in Holland, gambling at Monte Carlo-which is financed by the gambling of foreigners at the Casino, the extra day in Florence because of a strike that stopped transportation there, the Baths of Caracalla in Roma, the palace of Versailleq, Notre Dame and the two days of shop ping in Paris, tours of London and visit to Buckingham Palace, and Switzerland - the party's favorite country. Perhaps the most inspiring part of the tour was the audience with Pope Pius XII on July 20 in Vati can City. Mary Jumper obtained the audience for the group, and the Pope showed great interest in each of the students. The most humorous incident was the visit of three of the girls to 10 Downing Street. Upon asking if Churchill were home, they were told by a butler that Atlee was prime minister now. So the tour ended, as all good ihings- must, and the group re turned on the Queen Elizabeth, appreciating the United States so much more, but with the words, "Everybody treated us well." rolina Graduate, iry At NC State ,the "Outstanding Seniors" section of the "Garnet and Black," which has this to say of Rogers: "Family r man . . . walked the floor at night with the kid. . . . Has made a name ,for himself that won't soon be Sforgotten." Since his arrival at State Coi lege, R(ogers has busied himself with straightening out his office and the student office in the Y and helping with the publicity, Freshman work, and program planning. He hopes to do enough work towards his M.A. degree here this year to be able to complete his graduate study at Emory next summer.
