If trainees will withhold their inquiries concerning non-receipt or the amounts of their checks until around November 10, it will be of great assistance to the Vet erans Administration Office and will aid them In getting payments of subsistence allowance * com menced. Veterans claiming dependents must submit immediate proof. In case of a wife as the dependent, a marriage license must be sub mitted. If parents are claimed as dependents, a birth certificate must be furnished. Dependency pay does not start until the proper certificate is presented and is not boy made retroactive. Term insurance can still be re instated and converted to a per manent plan insurance. The vet eran must only meet the health requirements, and pay one month (grace period) premium at the term rate for the first month of lapse on the amount of insurance to be reinstated and converted and the first premium on the amount of the permanent plan selected. Editor - Joe Bishop has announced that a permanent office has been set up to house the "Review" in the pub lications building behind McKis sick Library. - In an informal meeting where he reasserted his pledge to main tain the high literary standings of the "Review," Editor Bishop announced that thq first issue would be published in early No vember. He also stated that all interested in writing short stories or poems would be welcome to join his staff. Forming the nucleus of Bishop's staff this semester will be Man aging Editor John T. F. Grindley; Associate Editors Helen Harbin, HUbert Hendrix, and Al Munn; and Co-Business Managers Betty and Ann Mood. William Flinn Gilland, Co lumbia, who received the degree of master of education from the uni versity at the- 1948 summer school graduation exercises, was the first regular air force officer to earn a graduate degree from the univer sity under the air force's civilian institution training program for commissioned officers. Gilland accepted a commission in the regular air force in January and was assigned to the university to study mental testing and psy chological and guidance service. He is now a member of the fac ulty of the air force special staff school at Selma, Ala. After receiving the degrees of bachelor of arts from the univer sity and bachelor of science from Clemson, Gilland joined the ad ministrative staff of the univer sity as assistant registrar in Janu ary, 1936. Flinn Gilland received a master of education degree at Carolina this summer, becoming the first to use the air force's special program in connection with work at the university. 2< and s I - -; ir Officer ler Program duty with the air corps early in j World War II where he served 27 months in the Central and West ern Pacific as executive officer of a heavy bombardment squadron. c He was awarded the bronze star medal, air medal and commenda tion ribbon and authorized to wear permanently air crew member's't wings for extended combat parti- c cipation as an aerial observer- v gunner. Gilland returned to the univer sity after his discharge and or- r ganized the Bureau of Placement and became its first director.
